I'm just curious about what the general consensus is about the overall capabilities of the Pre Runner. On & off road... rock & mall crawling, etc...

Depends on what kind of terrain you are looking at. Generally, if you pick the right lines on the trail, you can go through a lot.

I have a lot of experience in sand with my Prerunner before I bought 4x4. Air down tires and pick the right lines, take recovery gear, and another person. If you're an expert sand driver, you'll be fine. But it only takes misjudgment of the texture of sand to get stuck. And stuck bad.

As for mud, I've done pretty good.
Not much more out here in my part of town. So, snow, woods, and other terrain I can't help you with.

Again, not driving stupid will get you to most places you want to go.

If you like to off-road though, just stick with 4wd. But if it's nothing more than mall crawling and going through puddles, go for 2wd.

Generally speaking, here in southern Florida, it's mostly water from flood prone areas. You might also find yourself in the occasional swampy area, or sand on the beach.

Just wanted to see what people thought

You can definitely handle all the above, especially with the rear locker.

Tires play a HUGE role in how capable it will be.

^^ THIS. I'm upping my tires to something more aggressive for the times I find myself deep in the South Georgia woods on our farm.

I see your in Florida, airing down your tires will help, but with the sand we have down here, if you want to really go anywhere off road, you'll need 4 wheel drive.

I got around okay in southern VA swamps with my pre-runner, and mostly 2wd in the 4x4. Tires are key, so is knowing when to go around.

One can never have too many light bars.
Bring a shovel and air compressor with you and you can make it as far as you're willing to work. a few 1x8's wouldn't hurt either.

I almost got stuck in my yard unloading a shed kit... here in Florida....No I didn't need 4 wheel drive to get back over the stupid whatever berm I "own" but if you really want to wheel even here in the pre runner capitol of the south I would recommend you go 4 wheel drive. For me. Yep I might bitch about it even on the beach with deep sand, but crap, c'mon how often would I use it//// not much hence why a pre runner exists

For mall crawling a Prerunner is an allstar. Spindle lift, big tires, skewp...all the expensive dressup a manboy can play. For rock crawling a Prerunner is a total zero. Even TRD Offroads barely rate for rock crawling due to no solid front axle, lack of travel, and relatively fragile construction. But for general offroading a Prerunner should be fairly capable if driven right with good tires. There are offroad schools that start students out with 2wd trucks so they actually learn to drive without crutches until they can go places where the average driver fails with 4wd. I spent my first twenty years with a driver's license hunting, fishing, camping, and offroading with 2wd drive vehicles. But all things equal in truly difficult terrain a 4wd will go farther, and easier, then any 2wd anything.

    Not very :stirthepot:

It will never be "as capable" as a 4wd, but they are capable of leaving the pavement contrary to the belief of the mega hardcore badass rock crawling tough guy rockstar awesome off-road 4wd gods.

yeah.... a stock 4x4 would of walked up that without much issue.... stock TRD OR with atrac and locker..... even better.

OP has a sport so poor bastard is limited to pretty much a one tire fire. It will do decent off road in higher speed flat stuff.... but get her flexed at all.... your fucked. Lets just put it this way... going to pismo next weekend... you wont see any 2wd trucks that are not long traveled without locker / lsd out past the flats..... stock 4x4 rigs, no problem.

Eh, my baby is a mall crawler. No rocks or boulders in Florida. Just rain water, curbs, medians, and snowbirds. A little lift and tires is perfect for here.
