How can I know for sure that my Tacoma wasn't affected by the rust frame recall incident?

Just wondering if there's a way to know by the VIN or anything. I buy my Tacoma second hand, I am the third owner. It is a 2001.

You can sign up on the toyota owners site http://www.toyota.com/owners/home and look at the repair records for your truck with the VIN. If it was undercoated under the extended warranty (not really a recall) it should show up. If there is no record of undercoating or inspection for rust perforation then they truck is very likely not covered. Your time would be just about up anyway on a 2001 (+15 years = 2016). I think that all frames are susceptible and likely to rust through if not cared for or exposed to salt. If you are in a southern and dry area there is much less risk. You should still check under your truck and look for rust, remember it can start inside the frame.

You should definitely check the frame yourself because I had the dealer do a VIN search for me when I was about to purchase a 2001 Tacoma and they told me that the truck was not affected by the rust perforation issue.
I bought the truck and 2 years later I decided to tap on the frame with a hammer and sure enough it was rusted through by the passenger side leaf spring mount.
After several calls to Toyota head office I found out the truck had the frame inspection done in 2011 and they had applied undercoating to protect the frame, so obviously it must have been affected by the perforation issue or they wouldn't have done the inspection.
Needless to say, Toyota finally came through and replaced my frame last year but they didn't make it easy.
Apparently if your truck hadn't been inspected and treated by December 2012 then the 15 year warranty doesn't apply.
