I have 265/70/16s. Big as I could go (and wanted to for that matter).

I have 265/75/16's and they rub. I assume it's on the pinch welds... I need to do that mod.

Just sharing my experience. I have stock height suspension and they are Toyos.

    no lift, 31" diameter.
    265/75 16 is about 32

If you want it to fit nicely, add a 2" lift. If you don't care how nicely it fits, smash the pinch welds in and call it a day.

But really to add some helpful info, a lift (with the exception of a drop bracket kit) will not aid in fitting a larger tire so stock or not, a 265/75/16 is ideally the largest tire you can fit without interference.

You can get away with slightly larger, but the only person that can answer "how much larger" is you seeing as how every single truck varies slightly.

This is true. Any larger than 265 and you’re gonna have to do something other than a lift. I have found 2” lift and 255/85 16 (33 x 10 pizza cutter) to be great. Performs great off-road, had to smash the pinch weld, but no rubbing at full lock, and imo the best looking tire on first gens. Very rare with only 4 brands making the size. I’ve got Yokohamas :D

265/75/16 is the largest you're going to go before encountering rubbing - especially at full lock left or right. A good alignment, stock upper control arms, stock suspension will all factor into the 'will it scrub the frame' question.

If you don't or can't install a lift then stick with 265/70 or 265/75 16's. Just be aware you'll hit the frame a little at full lock. Just don't turn the wheel all the way and you'll be fine.

Moving away from stock 1st gen taco/3rd gen 4Runner wheels will also cause issues. Anything beyond a 4.6 backspace and you'll need additional mods to make it work.

In addition to threads mentioned above, take a look at this write-up.

Seems like everyday someone creates the same thread on 4x4 not working, prerunner 4wd conversion, blah blah blah. It's a given and nothing is going to change it.

Ignore the bs comments. Ya just joined the forum. Definitely use the search feature when possible and check the sticky threads but no need to feed the posts giving you crap.
