How big a headache is removing a broken clutch fork pivot bolt?

I've been keeping an eye out for a w59 tranny and one popped up pretty close to me. $600Can without transfer case and I quote "bell housing pivot bolt broken, possibly repairable". How crazy a job is it to remove?
    Thanks,
    BG

You mean the knub the fork pivots on? Should be easy I guess. It’s a screw in part. Look at this diagram. There’s your part number $17.

Probably just have to remove the bell housing to have room to wrench it. Use hand tools and slow pressure to break any bolts loose to avoid stripping or snapping anything.

I'll check with the seller but I assumes it had broken off in the housing.

I can’t imagine it would have broken off anywhere else lol. But the threaded portion is probably still in its hole. Should be removable either with a wrench in the best case or an extractor in the worst case. $600 sounds like a good deal.

I had to replace one once on a NV3500 transmission that wasn’t broken off and it still took a lot of penetrating fluid and heat. So if its broken off it might be very difficult without access to a shop.

Appreciate the info. I've asked the seller for a close up pick of the area. We'll see what I see.

It might very well be from the constant damp climate impacting things in my area.

They can be a royal pain in many cases the bell housing breaks .

    I broke 2

The Aluminum is so full of dirt I can not get it clean enough to get a good weld.

You have steel in Aluminum 15 years plus despite spraying with Kroil for days #1 Then heating with Oxy- Fuel Torch on the second one.

Time is money cheaper to buy a good used one.

So the seller just replied and it looks like the entire mount point snapped off. Though on the flipside I realized it doesn't really matter. Or at least I don't think it does...

Reason for looking is that last year I heard a bang and lost 3rd and 4th. I waffeld about rebuilding but I don't have the space so I've started looking for a replacement. I assume I can can just swap the bell housing and transfer case. I have a w59 and the listing states a first gen 5 speed manual transmission. Is there anything else I should check to confirm fitment?

edit: So I have the 3rz-fe engine and the transmission I'm looking at has come off a 5vz-fe engine

Those engines use two different transmissions that are not compatible

I broke the knob part of that bolt off on the tacoma. I just unscrewed the thing. Had a junk transmission from an 87. Robbed the one out of it, threads matched so I stuck it in the tacoma transmission. Works fine.

Why chance a mystery tranny? If you dont have the space for a removal/install then your gonna need to pay for the labor. Might as well just have your W59 rebuilt. Would be a PIA to pay for a removal/install for a mystery tranny only to find out its funky. I just had my W59 rebuilt by a quality shop for $1150 with a new NSK bearing kit. Put in a new fork, ball, clutch, resurface flywheel and rear main seal while everything was open. $3K for everything and should get another 100K easy.

Wow prices have gone up every place.

My last rebuild was $500.00 on a R150Fplus the new clutch kit.

Im not sure what they use to cost previously. I took it to All Standard transmission in Cambell CA. Recommended by many people on TW... old school shop and thats all they do. I investigated the route like OP is trying.... finding a used W59 and possibly having Marlin rebuild it but they were out of parts for 6 months. Remanufactured trannys from Toyota are like $2600. In the end it was just easier to have my friends shop pull the tranny and send it to All Standard. Then when it was out I had a new clutch and everything installed.

Because you were able to just unscrew the pivot ball.

I have never been able to ever remove one without the bell housing breaking and coming along.

Then the Aluminum is impossible to get clean after trying everything . To build that area up enough to weld new material to drill and tap.

It was cheaper to buy brand New Bell Housing Labor time wise.
