My house has a 15 year old Liftmaster and I have always used Homelink with it across various makes and models of cars, so I do not have a separate remote for the garage. I am not finding success when I try to program the Homelink using the "learn" button on the opener, it is as if the Tacoma can only be programmed with an actual remote.

Buy a replacement remote at Home Depot.

I did mine without the remote, using the overhead units learn button. You just have to let the remote option attempt and fail before it gives you the learn route as an option.

I have a Sommer Direct Drive garage door unit that I was never able to get to work with any vehicle with Homelink. After finally getting frustrated enough to be willing to spend the extra time on the phone with customer support for both Homelink and Sommer I learned there's a function with Homelink called "D-mode". Here's the instructions they gave me for switching the Homelink to D-mode that worked perfectly for me:

1.) Press and hold the outer two buttons of your car’s HomeLink, releasing only when the indicator light turns off (approximately 30 seconds).

2.) Press and hold all three buttons, releasing only when the HomeLink indicator light turns off (approximately 30 seconds).

3.) Press and release the red button labeled “Learn” on the garage opener’s control housing.

4.) Within 10 seconds, return to the car and press the button you desire to open the door for a second, release for a second, press for a second, etc. until the operator runs.

5.) Steps 1 and 2 should not be repeated to program additional operators to additional HomeLink buttons in the same vehicle.

Just out of curiosity I did a search for homelink D-mode and mostly came up with links for Tesla. I did finally go to homelink.com/program and they have instructions by vehicle and opener model. OP might want to start there.
