Where'd you see that? From their history page it shows the F150 getting better MPGs and getting up the hill faster. That was also the old body and gen 1 ecoboost too. The newer aluminum body truck was faster up the hill and that was with the 2.7 not the 3.5 eco. I wouldn't trust the MPGs anyway since they relied on the factory computer for them...

Don't blame you for wanting an N/A V8 though but the ecoboosts are hard to beat for low end power and mpgs. Turbos can you give both but not at the same time.

It all changes under tow. With a load the eco boost has to dump fuel into that tiny engine to make the power necessary to pull. The 5.7 doesn’t use much more fuel because the torque is already there.

Hybrid is probably right though. Likely going to be Toyota's hold out from going full electric.

I would say this is true for the “older” ecoboost motors. My 3.5L 2011 got around 15mpg city with lift and tires (18mpg before lift if I was driving down wind) and around 8 or less mpg towing a 35 foot boat.

I drove a rental 2.7L when my truck was in for an engine replacement at 70k miles for a blown turbo and it got 19-24mpg from Texas to Copper Mountain, CO.

I've had 4.3 V6's and they were very good in their day H.P. and m.p.g. wise...

    a 2wd rental.

You can’t compare that with a 4x4 if we’re talking gas milage. There’s a lot you’re not considering here. They’re geared differently (for gas milage) and you will loose a ton of tow capability. That means your milage will really drop off the chart if you tow.
secondly the 2.7 burns just as much as the 3.5. It runs at a higher compression with the same air to fuel ratio. It’s moving the same about of fuel and air.

They're definitely good motors. I just hate seeing people wedge Chevy motors in a Toyota when there are good options from Toyota.

I would much rather have a 22R in it, personally.

I heard Toyota is putting this in the Tacomas next year. They will go up any hill at any speed....once

Those tests are towing a heavy load up a steep hill and show the ecoboost getting better mpgs and making it up faster.

But in general I do agree that an engine underboost will use slightly more fuel than an NA engine to make a given amount of power. Mostly because to remain safe in boost the engine will run slightly richer.

The 4.3 was a good engine. It was a 350 with 2 cylinders cut off the block. The only issue was the 90° block. That's ideal for an 8 cylinder engine. But is inherently unbalanced as a six. That's why you see so many 60° V6s...Toyotas included.

But they tamed some of the harshness with some counter rotating shafts in some later versions.

Rental had the tow package with locking diff. While it was 2x2, I believe these models usually have a larger payload capacity due to less weight :)

not trying to start a flame war, just stating the differences I experienced between my 2011 versus a new ecoboost. Not only was the engine different/updated (direct and port injection, etc), the body was aluminum unlike my 2011. My point was, the year you are comparing matters.

I'm kind of the same way. But it's done because those engines are cheap and plentiful.

Personally....I would rather see a 1GR in it

It's hard to compare a 3.5 gen 1 which is direct injection vs gen 2 which has direct and port injection. Plus comparing a 2.7 and 3.5 isn't fair either. They're completely different motors all together. They just share the Ecoboost name. Plus the Sequoia doesn't have the option for a HDPP which includes lower gearing, heavy frame and tow mirrors to boot. We can compare a specific F150 model all day but the fact is you can adjust the configuration how you want because if we're comparing Ecoboost vs the 5.7 let's throw my motor into the ring
