I picked up a new adjustable hitch and it doesn't seem to be level. See picture. The camera and trailer are level in the picture.

    Is this ok?

Almost looks like the hitch receiver is sagged - is the truck squatting?

Looks a bit messed up . Why not get a standard hitch that has the right elevation. Might move the ball closer to the truck so less leverage on the hitch. Personally,I've got 45 years of towing experience,I would not use that hitch, though it's probably ok.

Without trailer on it....loosen bolts and put jack under receiver, make it level, tighten bolts back up.

From the photo, the hitch looks square and the receiver looks to be at an angle. If the truck is not squatting, then the receiver may have been hit (damaged) or installed incorrectly (like from the factory). Try checking the frame near the receiver.

Thanks folks, yeah truck does not squat (the trailer is only 2800lbs and I have sumo springs and factory 1" rake). It looks like this even without the trailer hitched.

Will take it to the dealer in a few days, truck is still under warranty.

The hitch itself is definitely on a downward angle. There’s something wrong with the hitch or the installation. I wouldn’t trust that hitch and I wouldn’t tow anything until the problem is resolved. Who ever installed it should have seen the problem and resolved it before you drove off with it like that. I’d be pissed when I brought it back to who ever installed it.

Took it to the dealer and found a '19 OR on the lot to compare with (mine's '23 OR) while they were parked side by side on level ground.

Looks to me like the problem is the part of the receiver that the hitch shank inserts into is welded about a half inch lower in my truck: https://imgur.com/a/aBzeSTj

This was just a service appointment so they didn't spend too much on it but my service person agreed to make another appointment just to diagnose this further. Will report back...

Are you the original owner of it? Assuming so since it's a 2023. Any rear end accidents?

Just for giggles remove the draw bar and put it in upside down and see what it looks like.

It looks like the jig for the hitch receivers was off that day and the front got welded on low causing the downward angle. Hopefully they swap it out for you and don’t say “it’s safe, deal with it”

It's ugly, but as long as all the bolts are installed properly and tight it's functional. I'd throw that drawbar in the lake and get a better one. Terrible design. Generally you get what you pay for in adjustable hitches. If you are going to keep that adjustable hitch, I'd figure out the width of the gap behind the ball mount and shim it so it doesn't angle like that. But as said above, if that is all you are going to tow, just get a draw bar with the appropriate raise.

It would drive me nuts to have an angle on my receiver like that, but as long as it is bolted and welded properly, it won't hut anything.

Definitely the truck's hitch receiver. That is pathetic.

The adjustable ball mount you have is the same as mine. Curt, right? It will rattle in two places, but it is perfect for my lift, my primary trailer, and my needs for flexibility with trailer tongue heights. But it will rattle in two places, and I made some tweaks that with further stabilize your setup:
    1. Use a threaded locking receiver pin like this, which has in internal wedge that makes it feel as solid as the truck frame. https://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Hitch-Lock/Softride/SR25219.html
    2. Replace the useless f'ing little rubber button pad in the adjustable ball mount slider with a decent piece of solid, but slightly compressible rubber. I experimented with a million random things, but what finally worked was a $2 rubber furniture leg pad from Ace hardware. I had to stand on the ball with full body weight to compress it enough that I could insert the pin.

Yep that's the one. I don't mind the rattle so much but it's something like a 11" shank whereas my previous one was 8". Could be why I never noticed this before.

Update from dealer tech: "inspected tow hitch and confirmed that tow hitch looks to be bent inward. lifted on rack and used angle gauge and found that hitch has an angle of 4.3 degrees. checked on another Tacoma close in year, 21 Tacoma and vehicle has the same style hitch. checked the angle on that hitch and the angle is at 1.3 degrees. tow hitch is bent but no visible damage or stretch marks when bent. spoke with management and wants me to open a case and inform FTS about the issue. will proceed with suggestions."

Service advisor says they'll get back to me in a week or two on how we'll move forward.
