Hitch mounted winch setups: Post'em if you got'em (gathering insight)

    I really like the idea of a hitch mounted winch with a front hidden receiver (from @Mobtown Offroad ). Seems like a more useful setup if you're going to drop the coin on a decent winch since you can use it in the back too. @Pigpen I know you have one of these so I'm hoping you can chime in.

    But I have a few concerns. First, is weight. Is it really feasible to lug around a 120lb rock that you put into the front or rear when you're in a jam? Also, how do you store it on/in the vehicle when it's not in use but you have it with you? I suspect keeping it attached to the front or rear would DRASTICALLY reduce approach and departure angles. I guess I'm just concerned that having it movable, although versatile, would be such a pain I might opt to leave it at home more often than not. :(

    Also, what winches are getting attention these days? I feel like Smitty is stepping up their game from years past but I'm not familiar with many others.

    I store my winch in the truck bed under my sleeping platform. It's easy to access the way I have it stored.

    With the top of the platform down, I can still access the winch from the back. It just slides right out. If I'm really stuck, I just attach it to the rear. If I plan to get stuck, I'll attach it up front ahead of time.

    With it in front, the approach angle is unaffected.

    On the rear, departure angle is greatly affected. If I have to use it on the rear, I either just put it back in the bed or transfer it up front - depending on whether I turn around or continue at that point. I never drive around with it attached to the rear.

    The winch I'm running is a Warn X8000i. It's an old model they haven't made in years. I think the new version is called the 9500Xi and is a more powerful version.

    The vertical board keeps the tools from sliding back to the tailgate and smashing my groceries. It slides out vertically and I can access the winch and tools.

    On the rear, it sits pretty low

    But it'll get you going the right direction, when the right direction is backward.

    The truck is buried to the frame in packed snow in those pics, the bottom of the winch sits flush with the hitch receiver.

    Edit: with a plate bumper, the winch would sit much higher - assuming the receiver is behind the license plate. On a stock hitch, you can open the tailgate with the winch attached, and drink a victory beer sitting on the gate.

    Very nice thanks for the pics and info, I have the mobtown front hitch receiver waiting with another TW member until we meet in the summer. Thinking about winching options in the mean time. I plan on replacing the steel line with synthetic line to help with the weight when moving it around.

    I kept the steel line for durability. It's been on for almost 20 years. It's getting beat and should be replaced in the next few years.

    As a much more clean, and secure, storage method than mine...there's a thread where a member bolted a small receiver into the bed of the truck. I'll see if I can find it. It was a long time ago.

    Also, if you have a car trailer, you can mount a receiver to the tongue and use the same winch.

    @Pigpen That's a pretty cool setup. Good to hear the front approach angle isn't affected. I was worried about that. Being able to leave it in when wheeling is great news.

    Which front receiver do you have? The Mobtown unit? Also, are most winch cradles created equal or are there important differences?

    I have the CBI front hitch. It was the only one available back when I bought it - other than the stupid Curt hitch. I really like that it is invisible when the hitch isn't on. The receiver and recovery points on the Mobtown Offroad unit stick out of the grill. The recovery points aren't bad, but I don't like how the receiver looks, poking out. Plus, with the Mobtown hitch, the winch sticks out significantly further. I like how my winch sits tight to the front end with my CBI hitch.

    The cradle I use is from Warn. It works great, and I think it looks better than the others I've seen.

    Yeah the Mobtown unit has the shackle hooks which I very much like. I know they might not be critical but I think they are important in case I need to use a snatch block on a tree and need a pull point on the front.

    I think I'm going to end up with a Smittybilt (98510) X2O unit with synthetic rope. The longevity of steel cable doesn't really appeal to me very much since I'd only be bringing this thing out when I go wheeling or on trips. Thus, I don't think it will rot all that quickly in the garage. Also, weight is a concern. Damn thing will already be a bitch to carry around even with synthetic rope.

    What are you using for connection purposes? I'd like to embed a receptacle of sorts in the front and rear with a quick connector wired to the winch. Does anyone make that?

    A full size Dodge guy we meet while on the TW RRG trip last summer had a rear mounted hitch that seriously came in handy. A lot easier than trying to find a place to turn around on some very narrow trails. As this was my first real offroading trip I was surprised how useful it was.

    Warn sells quick connect kits for both the front and rear. The rear kit comes with a fuse and a switch. I hooked both kits together so I can kill power to both when the winch isn't in use. Switched off, there's no power to either the front or rear plug. Warn also sells nice dust caps for the plugs. I keep one on each of my plugs. The rear dust cap is zip tied in place, since I never drive around with the winch back there. It just dangles while the winch is in use. I do drive around with the winch up front, so I just toss that plug in the center console.

    Thanks for the link. Those look similar to what I've found on Amazon too. Just need to come up with a way to secure them.

    For fusing, looks like I need 500A. I was HOPING I could go with a breaker so it could double as a switch but I don't think anyone makes a 500A. The 300A was the best I could find. Seems silly to go with a car audio fuse but that's about all I'm finding. Did you ground to chassis or run a dedicated line to the battery?
