Can the Tacoma handle a hitch mounted Motorcycle carrier? ZX10R sport bike with a curb weight of 454lbs.

As long as you have the proper hitch class the carrier requires it will be fine

Tacoma's come with a Class IV hitch if you have the OEM one. Class IV is rated at 1000lb tongue weight, but the Tacoma itself is only rated for 640 (verify with your owners manual). That 640 would probably carry your bike and the carrier, but you will be sagging REALLY bad in the back, and will most likely prematurely wear out your leaf springs. I'd suggest getting air bags if you want to do this. Firestone Ride-Rites are a good option and pretty cheap in the grand scheme. Just keep a bicycle pump in the truck for making adjustments to them. Also, try and keep your taillights visible, as your bike has a good chance of blocking them. Add on lights might be a good idea on your hitch carrier.

Not that heavy, IMHO. You'd want something in the mid-300lb region, max?

A borrowed DR350 on the HF carrier that went on a decent journey to the NW corner of WA and back:

I don’t think I’d hang more than dirt bike off a Tacoma hitch. Better off with the right tool for the job,,, a trailer.

I did a hitch mount until I flipped the bike off it…then back to my trusty trailer. Had a few buddies do the same thing. One his sheared off and dragged the bike down the interstate going 80, ground right through the triple clamp and fork tube. He ran one for years and years, now back to a trailer the last time I saw him.

Some guys love them, but not for me.

Yes go to the motorcycle section, plenty of threads. Maybe run moto tank to E to save a few more pounds being dry but it will handle it fine. It will squat a bit unless you have aftermarket suspension on there with stiffer leaf packs. My pro rear is significantly stiffer than a sport, uncertain of the OR. Truck did not love it but handles acceptably if you drive like a normal person.

I wouldn't put my R1250gs on it. Not a chance. But that's why I have a trailer. Just think about how much weight is going down on that hitch when you hit a bump or anything

Have you upgraded your Pro rear suspension? If not then the leaf springs are the same as OR and Sport.

I wouldn't put a liter bike on a hitch carrier on any truck.

Any hitch carrier that will handle a liter bike will be spaced far enough away from the back of the truck / hitch to effectively or triple the moment load on the hitch.

What? A dirt bike requires being farther away from the truck then a liter bike. Liter bikes don’t sit further out then most motorcycles. They are narrow, with clip ons.

The bars of most dirt bikes are going to be above the top of the tailgate as are the mirrors of most sport bikes.

The bars of a sports bike are commonly lower than the tailgate, and wider than the "body" of dirt bike, and as such set the minimum distance between the center of gravity of the bike and the receiver.

    As seen in this thread
