    I think he is referring to one of those baskets that connects straight to the hitch.

    Yes, what he said. Sorry for the confusion. Something to put a cooler on and some other stuff for a trip to OBX. Worried about getting pulled over cause of the license plate. Is the license plate visible/legal with the carrier loaded?

    I don't know the laws off hand but I've never seen special mounted lights or relocated license plates when people have these installed.

    The laws are probably different in each state but when I built a motorcycle carrier for the back of my last truck, the only reason I relocated my plate and installed lights was because the motorcycle blocked the view of the trucks tail lights. If I was just carrying a cooler or small loads I probably would have just installed some red reflective tape on the carrier and claimed ignorance if I got pulled over by the police.

    FYI- If i remember correctly, the law in Ontario Canada is that anything that hangs out past your tail lights by 3ft or more must have lights or a red flag on it.
