2016 SR5 V6 RWD, 39,000 miles - I've read a bit on this and my daughter had this warning pop up the other day after driving about a mile, shutting it off, going into a store for 5 minutes and coming out. She turned it off and back on after I told her to and it went away and we haven't seen it again. I'm taking it in Saturday as a precaution and asked to have the Cam Position Sensor looked at, but am wondering if there are any other ideas from those who've dealt with it. She does drive it with the ECT on a lot, could that contribute? Any help or advice is appreciated as I'm new to the Taco world.

Tends to happen when rolling backwards in D and then hitting the gas. It's like a failsafe...several others have had the same issue including myself.

Some discussion on it here, starting page 18
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3rd-gen-true-crawlin-thread.613915/page-18

If she was backing out of a spot and put it into drive too quickly that could have also caused it.

Could be that the tranny fluid if low if you have the towing package.

Any easy way to check that? I read there is no dipstick...but didn't actually look... and wouldn't you think we'd see it again? Not questioning your knowledge, I truly appreciate the advice, but I did think if it was low we'd notice it again. It's been a week now since she saw it and she drives it every day, usually much farther than that.

That is a very good question...I honestly don't know, we bought it used, but believe so as it has both trailer pin connectors and the hitch. I have not checked for a trans cooler though so can't say for certain.

Just pop the hood and look in front of the engine radiator, should be a small one mounted in front of it which would be the trans oil cooler.

If you have the trailer plugs, flat 4 and round 7, in the bumper next to the license plate area, you most likely have it.
To check the level, the tranny has to be up temp and special tools used.

my guess is that she was backing out of a spot at the store, and while still rolling backwards put it in D and hit the gas pedal, thus stalling the truck and throwing the error.

This will be the first question I ask when I see her. Great insight on this, I hadn't seen it as a solution and I have this bad habit myself (guess who taught her to drive...).

Could be the CPS going. You have a 16, in FL, and in the dead heat of summer. That's when most CPS failures occurred back then.

That's good to know. I highlighted that for the service advisor tomorrow. Thanks!

It should be a rule to update a post with the outcome.

They take from the collective, but don't ever give anything in return.

Hoping for a reply! This just happened to me, shut the truck off and started it again and the message was gone. Trying to prepare for whatever is to come :annoyed:
