Gonna do a little sprucing up on the yota, 1st time the plastic liner has been pulled out. Heard pretty good things about the herculiner roll on, anyone have experience with it here? I’m on a budget so hopefully it goes good.

I’ll post up some pics of the finished product tomorrow or maybe Thursday.

Whats wrong with the plastic bedliner? I would just leave it in if it were mine, saves the bed from dents. My truck never had a liner of any kind, the bed floor is beat to hell, along with the wheel wells and the tailgate. No kind of spray/roll liner would have saved it from the constant beatdown it gets from throwing engine blocks and transmissions in it, but a plastic liner would have given it a chance to look good after all the abuse.

traps water under it, which causes rust and rot.

I did the bed in my truck with herculiner. Was OK. I didn't have anything in the bed other than camping gear so their was minimal wear.

So does a spray/roll in liner.

OP's truck is 19yrs old, that bed looks practically new, besides a few rubbed paint spots and what looks like some very minor surface rust. a good clean up and wax job, then toss that thing back in.

    Just my $.02

Not sure how you think a sprayed on liner traps water underneath it.

Yea, i was wondering that myself?
Ah thanks for the comments, i think ill just roll with it and see how it does... I did forget to mention my bed does not see alot of abuse or heavy stuff thrown in it a ton so aside from maybe some fading if i prep right im hoping it will hold up... I got a discount so i only paid like $75 tax and all so its worth that vs what a "professional" liner would run.

Any spot that is not covered or any pinhole from a popped air bubble in the liner will allow moisture inside. Trapped moisture equals rust. I've done rust repair on several vehicles with sprayed undercoating, as well as sprayed in liners where the metal was eroded away so bad it looked like a flaky biscuit beneath the liner, and the liner was the only thing keeping it's shape and hiding the issue from plain sight. And this is Texas, where stuff doesn't rust all that quickly.

I had one customers FJ40 that had a LineX liner sprayed inside and underneath the tub after a high dollar restoration. 5 years later the floor pans were literally falling apart because of rust from the moisture being trapped inside the liner. It was not an easy fix due to having to scrape away and chisel the liner off to get back to clean bare metal to install the new pans, and LineX told the owner to kick rocks, so he had to shell out big bucks for that repair.

I'm not saying spray/roll in liners are bad. Some will outlast the life of the truck, and still look great after years of use. I'm just saying if this were my truck, I'd opt to reinstall the plastic liner and keep truckin.

I did mine like 6 years ago.
It's definitely due for a re-do now, though. Totally worth it, and I'd do it again (and I plan to). You'd have to do it 6 times to approach the cost of a Line-X, so worth it IMO.

Just make sure you sand down the clear coat and paint. I used an RO sander (don't recall what grit tho)

I used hercliner on my bumpers when I monstlined my truck. The stuff faded in less then 6 months and is now getting shredded by rocks and stuff off the road.

So I dunno if you can guess my opinion on it.

One of the reasons why I'm not a fan of roll on or spray on. All it takes is one pin hole, a scratch along a seam and rust can start creeping unchecked under the coating. I think that's what ruined the bed I just spent a bunch of money replacing.

The only way for rust to get anywhere other than the exposed area of your bed (scratched coating) is if the coating has bubbled up and separated from the metal. That's really just a sign of crappy prep work.

Sand it down, fix any current rust, and coat it. Done

If you still have problems with rust, I would suggest stop parking your truck in the ocean.:D
