i have an 01 Tacoma 3.4 v6 TRD off-road, automatic with a bad transmission. What year transmission from 4-Runner or Tacoma will match up to my 01? It’s an A3040E. I bought a ‘99 same model transmission but was told it won’t fit.

4-Runner and Taco? And is there a way to modify the 99 transmission to fit?

I would think that the simplest solution would be another A3040E but I can't specify what years they were in.

Or if the electronic controls could present an issue.

Maybe @gearcruncher would have some insight on that for you.

4Runner and Tacoma A340E are different. The A340E was used on many many different cars, from the Toyota Supra to the Isuzu Bobtail Truck.

You have to use a Tacoma A340E. The 4Runner A340E has a longer output shaft and different tail section.

Not necessarily. You just need a 1995-2002 Tacoma PreRunner A340E. Keep in mind 1995-1997 had a cable driven Speed Sensor, while the 1998-2002 had a digital VSS.

While you can use a 1995-1997 A340E, you’ll have to convert it to a digital signal. 1998-2002 is what you need.

    Also, try www.car-part.com

    Where are you located?

Thanks. Ok. i was told it was a “manual kickdown vs a digital.” I wasn’t sure what they meant.

I have a 99 transmission from a 4-Runner. What do I need in order to convert it?

They mean electronic & is what 03-04 Tacomas are. It's possible to convert 03-04 to work in your 01 but you have to change a few parts. Easier to just find the correct one if you can.

If it's from a Tacoma it should but your post above said it from a T4R?

It’s from a 4-Runner. It’s a 30-40LE. So is mine. Just a different serial #. First pic is mine. Second is the one I bought.

Sell it. You have to swap the output shaft which requires tearing down the entire transmission. Not for the faint of heart.

The 4Runner has a completely different tailsection and longer output shaft. The Tacoma A340E is completely unique. You cannot use the 4Runner transmission.

The Lexus SC400 A340E has the same tail section design, but a different driveshaft flange.

    @flyjasfly

Did you end up attempting the install on the 4Runner trans into the Tacoma and did it work?
