I am aware that if you do not fully tighten your gas cap, no clicks, then it disrupts the pressure inside and causes engine error. This results in the "trac off" and "check engine" lights to appear on dashboard, which causes your cruise control to be disabled. This problem usually self corrects itself by tightening the gas cap and after 2-3 days of driving the problem goes away.

Now, I know 100% I fully tightened the gas cap. But, I still get this warning light problem as of recent. Anyone else get this problem? Any work around solutions? Do I have a bad sensor? Just trying to gather info before going to dealership. Thanks in advance.

good luck, I have the same issues, they threw on a new fuel pump, it had a low fuel pressure code, pressure test on the pump showed eratic pressures, truck runs like a top, but the lights wont stay off. A reset last for one start and drive, stop and shut off ignition cycle and they reappear when you start it again. Toyota tech thoroughly perplexed

For me, it was a missing oil fill cap. Go figure. o_O

@fuelhead, I know this is an old post, but were you ever able to get this problem solved? I'm having the same issue, CEL codes are showing fuel pressure regulator. They are telling me it's the evap canister, which they've ordered. Not sure if I believe that it will fix it...

    Mine just started doing this.
    Question:

What damage can happen while driving until I get a shop to give me the codes?

    @Pabobfin

I am no mechanic, but I don't think you are damaging anything.

Am now driving with no Cruise Control and both the CEL and Trac off lights on.
I visited numerous Auto Parts store to have codes checked and all had something to do with brake control and emission codes.
As well as other codes which each were different.
I have tried injector cleaner with no help.
Also checked the gas cap..which the O ring looks fine and the cap clicks as designed.

Am I to resort to taking the problem to the dealer service dept and right them a blank check?

You could take it to the dealer and have them tell you what's wrong and then decide if you want them to fix it or take it home and try yourself .

I could but, from what posts about this has indicated that all the dealers are guessing.
I'm surprised there is no Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) on this.
    Or is there one?

You can't believe everything you read on the net. Yeah some dealer service centers have clowns, but many just do their job and fix vehicles. You're guessing here, the dealer will not be. You won't know there's a TSB until you take it to the dealer. You have a 6 year old truck; yeah at some point, you'll have to make repairs.
BTW; if you're really in a 6 year old Tacoma, you're asking for help/guessing in the wrong section ;)

With all the issues regarding the dash warning lights I would assume there had to be a TSB on the issue.
I'm aware of the talents at the dealership service end hence the training they are mandated to take.
But, there seems to be a large cloud over this issue with no clear resolution.
    Thanks for the response Chew.
    Its appreciated.

I have the same trac off light and check engine light. Got it scanned and it’s reading as a camshaft sensor error.

I’m still trying to trouble shoot on my own, as I have a low battery reading 10.9v.

    Or could be rats

    Or just a bad sensor

Have had the scanning process done last week and the following popped up.

P0333..KNOCK SENSOR low voltage (tighten fuel cap that wasnt loose and added injector cleaner and for the record, read that if the battery was disconnected that would clear the lights...didnt clear them.

    C1241 & C1242..VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM
(brake system)..have not done anything with these codes.

    Wala!!
Turns out the wiring to my knock sensor was chewed up by rodents.
$5-6k repair...thankfully it is covered by me car insurance.
Still in the shop and awaiting the pickup from the dealership.
    Hopefully..
Dodged a bullet on this one.

Anyone have this issue with error code P0456, evap leak... I gave the fuel cap a real good clean and tighten and pull negative lug but nothing. Same deal, Trac Off + Check Engine + no cruise control. Night prior to getting the check engine I drove for ~10min with cap open... Any ideas thanks

Connect a scanner and clear the code. The code should take 2 trips to return if the issue remains. But you should be able to see it pending on the scanner if you're impatient.

Disconnecting the battery for 10min will give you a nice reset
