I didn't even want the exhaust tip on in the first place but I guess painting it may just be the next best option if I can't get it off.

Axle dump and put the tip back on. It looks good. 20190814_191925.jpg

Plan on installing one on mine. Any suggestions on what to apply before so I'm not going through this in the future ?

I would use some Kroil let it soak in and use a chisel at the slit. If not pencil grinder and some patience.

That looks pretty clean, and the rust isn't too bad. The easiest way to remove that without damaging either part is a small chisel a hammer and patience. First slowly work the chisel at a 90° angle into the slits to start prying them out slightly. Once you get some separation, slowly work the chisel around lightly prying and working across the flap to the next slit. Then work the next flap. If you have 2 opened up slightly, you may start getting it to wiggle. If not then work the next flap. Eventually the pipe will wiggle so you can work it off. If you plan on putting it back on again, coat the pipe in a quality high temperature neverseize before install. It will help on later servicing.
