I've done a few timing belt jobs. Some have been crusty/rusty bastards. I've come close to using the starter bump method but they've always managed to break loose with a cheater bar. The crank pulleys have never caused me too much grief. The more difficult ones required little more than a few light strikes from a rubber mallet and well placed light prying with a smaller pry bar. No mongloid manipulation or special tool was necessary.

Way I look at it is you already saved over a thousand dollars doing this job yourself. You can afford to buy the appropriate tools especially a $17 harmonic balancer kit from harbor freight LOL.

I feel you but you really need the right tools beforehand when you start a project like this so a one day job doesn't take a week or longer and multiple trips to the parts store. Been there, done that. Closest store to me is a 25 min drive one way.

Is this better for pulling the pulley or the "harmonic balancer puller" type better? If both work, which one will I be able to use for other repairs more?

I like the one from autozone, its expensive and heavy duty......has a bearing that it spins on....
I have both the jaws and universal pulley puller, I would use mine again on mine...
but if someone brough me an old crusty thing knowing some of them bolts/pulleys havent budge for twenty years......I'd go get the autozone one and then take back........If I bought it......it would jenkz me and never need it again.......so I'll use my harbor freight selection like a little girl.........

If your gonna spring for anything...get one of these....one of my most used tools.....

There's also the starter bump method, which is dangerous but apparently super cheap. Disconnect the EFI relay and position your breaker bar resting above the truck frame. Then hit the starter for a 1/2 second to break loose the bolt and hope nothing flies off and/or breaks.

Edit: I see you already got desperate enough to try this. Hehe good luck with the rest of the job.

Yup. The bolt is off. Now the puley isn't budging without special pulley puller.

I seem to remember making my own pulley puller with some long bolts from the hardware store and a piece of steel bar stock. Kinda fiddly but it worked.
