    Hello,

I've got a bit of a situation here. I was helping my fiancée do a transmission fluid change on her '97 2.4L Tacoma. We were trying to figure out how to remove the filter, and as I was looking at my phone trying to find a YouTube video about it, she tells me "ummm, some little balls just fell out...."

Well, turns out she removed part of the Valve body while I wasn't looking.
The truck has an A43D transmission. I think I know where the check balls go (although I'm not positive about the two on the right), but there's a tiny little pin that also fell out also and I have no idea where it goes! I'll attach some pictures here.

Can somebody please help me reassemble this thing!? 20220228_190245.jpg 20220228_190235.jpg

    here now
I think thats a pin that holds the check valves in . Let me see what else I can find
There is an overhaul manual at the bottom of the first post
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...sions-write-up-your-4-speed-automatic.325531/

I think you are better off looking at Trans go shift kit instructions
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...-body-shift-kit-install-with-pictures.632542/

Use vaseline to hold the checkballs in place . You can also use vaseline to hold the keepers in as well.

Are you sure you got everything out of your oil catch pan ?
Those shift kit instructions shows where to put the pin back and also where your check balls need be placed

I appreciate the response, but I don't see any mention of that pin in the threads you referenced. Actually, the OP is very careful not to remove the check balls or any pins when installing the shift kit (As far as I can tell). Also, the A340F transmission is not the same as mine, and I haven't found any resources for the A43D valve body yet.

Again, I really appreciate the help, but do you think you could dig up a resource that is a bit more relevant to my situation? Or maybe I just don't know how to apply this information properly, idk.

    Thanks.

    Maybe this will help?
Also note, the check ball locations are at the END of the manual

Just did a quick google search and found this: https://procarmanuals.com/pdf-online-a43d-transmission-service-and-repair-manual/ and it looks to be the right manual for your tranny. Th bottom of page AT-82 shows the locations of the pins and check balls. Unfortunately they are installed in the upper portion of the valve body, so as gearcrucher said you can hold them in place with vaseline in the upper portion and then reinstall the lower. Normally you'd do this inverted on a bench and gravity on your side.

Be careful to torque down the valve body slowly and carefully. Start in the center and work outwards, torque spec is really light at 48 inch pounds (4 foot pounds). Hope this helps, I recently tore into mine and took a fair bit of googling to get going again.

    Hey everybody.

Thank you so much for all the resources and input! I have good news: the truck is running again and shifting better than ever! I just put together a little picture detailing where I put the check balls and pin. I just stared at the valve body for awhile and decided there was only one place that pin could go where it could conceivably fit and serve a purpose. I stuck it in with some coconut oil and it fit perfectly, so I guess I got lucky?

Time will tell if the truck continues to function, but it seems to be shifting fine and O/D is activating and deactivating as it should, so I think all is well.

Also, FYI, the check-ball positions in these photos match up with the ones in my original post, so those were right, I believe. Those pictures just show their locations on the plate instead of in the actual valve body.Check ball service diagram.jpg

Btw, I figured it out before I looked at this post, but I think this is actually the manual I needed. Thanks for that, most helpful link so far. It even mentions the pins :)

Nice work! Glad you got it figured out!
