I think the cost percentage varies with insurance companies for totaling out a vehicle. For instance, some insurance companies might say 40 percent or 50 percent of the vehicles value. In other words, the repair costs would need to exceed whatever the set percentage is. With new cars being so expensive it's more likely the insurance company would repair than total.

Personally, I wouldn't want the vehicle back after a major repair. I'd work with my insurance to get the matter resolved and then trade in or sell the vehicle for something else. Hiring out for a certified diminished value appraisal would be worth looking into, but it's not always a guarantee. After you have it, you notify the at fault insurance company with a demand letter in the hopes they'll pay otherwise you'll have to go to court for it. As others have mentioned the amount is usually less than ideal. Sometimes only a few thousand, but it could be more.

I'm going thru a claim for diminished value right now after being hit in my brand new tacoma. I used a company called Tiger DV. He charged $349 and the diminished value amount is 4500 bucks. I'm waiting on progressive to accept my appraisal now (it's been 2 days since I sent it over)

would this be done once the vehicle is already fixed? It’s currently in the shop but I do have pictures of the vehicle prior to the crash.

Curious about the outcome when you hear. I have progressive insurance currently, but I've used many companies. They're all great until you have a claim or an issue. I suspect they'll counter offer. I wouldn't push back too hard if you're not happy with their proposal, but I suppose it's all how you ask and who you get on the phone that day.

Usually yes as the diminished value is based on the total amount of the repair work along with what the vehicle cost new and current price trends, but you can always work with someone before hand to get all your ducks in a row. Definitely do your research to find a reputable appraiser for that.

Exactly. I put my truck info into Vroom and it already knew about the accident and the offer was lower because of it

Having worked in the car business I'll share this...

I have seen used cars that were bought at an auction or traded in and then resold to a customer unknowingly with a clean carfax report only to have the customer return 1-3 months later extremely upset with a fresh copy of the carfax report showing damage. Carfax doesn't always update instantly. Sometimes it takes a few months.

So when buying used, definitely do your research and know what to look for.

my truck is a 2021 trd sport 4x4 DCSB.
The appraisal came back at 41k without accident on the car fax. With the accident it's around 37k. This is all from the appraiser.

Back when Toyota had the frame rust campaign going, people were waiting half a year for frames, so that may be a no-go. Frame replacement means Bob the mechanic will take apart your truck and put it back together. One pinched wire or bent pin (out of 200 reconnected) can give you electrical gremlins forever. But don't worry, 80% of the time it'll be fine. :)
At-fault accident is an at-fault accident on his record. Doesn't matter if the payout is $15k or $30k, your brother will get screwed regardless because insurance companies have profit targets to reach. Unless of course if he paid extra premiums for an "accident forgiveness" clause.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
FWIW that was mot my experience when the frame was replaced on my '06 TRD OR over 6 years ago. Visited my truck numerous as it sat in 3 pieces in the shop waiting for the frame to arrive. Aside from the minor lingering odor of the shop's indoor environment, I had ZERO issues.
YMMV as it will depend on the skill of the wrench who does the work.

It's not a bent frame......the frame is literally brand new. It was replaced in it's entirety...not fixed. Same thing as getting a new headlight or body panel....it's new OEM replacement, so it's not considered a "repair".

That’s a load of horse shit. If literally the single biggest component of a vehicle was replaced. It is a MAJOR deal.

like replacing an engine… or the entire cab etc

just because it’s new doesn’t mean dick.

Im not saying it's not a big job....but when done by professionals.....there is literally ZERO difference from a vehicle that never had it done.

In fact...it's actually probably better than when it was built from the factory....because every fastener was retorqued by hand...and not a machine that has no clue if the bolt ever made it in or not.

It's a literal unbolt, swap parts, rebolt replacement....nothing more than that. I've taken vehicle bodies off frames before...not that hard. I can guarantee you a vehicle that's had a body off repair or restoration is put back together FAR better than what an assembly line will do.
