Hello all! I've noticed an oil spot on my driveway ever since I took my truck in for Toyota Care maintenance a few months back. They changed the oil and filter as well as the other scheduled stuff.

Here's a pic of the spot in relation to the under area:

    IMG_2600.jpg

Here's a pic of a component covered with wet "oil":

    IMG_2602.jpg

When I put my finger to the wet areas, it feels oily and smells like mineral oil or motor oil and seems to be clear.

Any thoughts of what this could be? I'd like to get a general idea of what it could be before taking the truck in.

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions/overall consulting on this matter.

Are you sure it has a motor oil smell? I'd have guessed brake fluid or gear oil back there.

Gear lube you'd know, it's very distinct.

ETA: Leaking shock makes sense, too.

What would cause a leaking shock on a relatively new car?

It could be, it's just that I'm not sure what brake fluid smells like.

Cold weather can make the seals go bad. Once they heat back up and cool down rapidly can cause cracking.

Doesn't really. It's nasty, so wipe a little in your eye and tell us if it burns really bad or perhaps you lose vision.

Leaking shock. Cold weather + big pothole = blown shock. Or, just a bad one from the factory...

    LOL thanks.

I get the feeling this will be a pain in the butt. But it helps to know what in the world of possibilites it could be.

For some reason I was under the impression cars didn't have shocks anymore. Maybe that's some cars and not all.

Dirt on the shock shaft nicks a seal and then it starts leaking.

Usually if you see a leak start looking up. Keep going up and when you don't see any more evidence of leaking you have found the source. I'll bet money there's nothing on the top of the upper shock mount...leak is at the shaft-seal.

Most likely the shock. Buy Bilstein 5100's, get a pair. They ride better anyway.
