I cannot make up my mind on which tonneau cover to buy. Hoping to get more input from fellow Taco owners.

Ideally I'd prefer a hard cover for security reasons, but after all the research I've done I just can't justify the cost right now. Also many reviews I've seen for hard covers, including the popular Bakflip models, always point out about water leaks and fragile materials. The bakflip for example has issues with the cable latch breaking apparently and the Extang solid fold leaks a lot of water, people have also reported the hardware melting at times.

The tonneau covers that I have in mind:

    • Extang Trifecta 2.0 soft tri-fold: $400 - more expensive for a soft cover, but seems to have the best reviews of its kind for durability.

    • Gator EXT soft tri-fold: $219 - this model seems to be Gator's cheapest soft cover, which is only sold through different online retailers like Amazon. Gator sells a SFX for slightly more on their website, they do not list the EXT on their site for some reason.

    • Truxedo Truxport vinyl roll up: $309 - still not sold on a roll up because I've read that the velcro will eventually wear out, I do like the fact that you can use the full bed easily tho.

    • Tyger t3 tri-fold: $200 - the cheapest of my selections, pretty decent reviews but quality seems to be the biggest drawback. Cheap brackets, vinyl, etc... People have also reported that their covers have flown off in high speeds.
    Any advice????

Thanks! I've been doing a lot of research on tonneau covers and noticed you're in a lot threads and have owned a few different covers.

Is the quality of the Trifecta tri-fold a substantial difference to the lower cost models from Gator, Tyger, Rough Country, etc..?

Just asking because the price difference between the Extang and the rest is about $150-200 more.

I have Peragon on my truck and its fantastic. https://www.peragon.com/

Metal, has locks, folds up, easily removable. They almost always have some kind of promo deal going on too. Made in america and their customer service, also based in USA, are incredible. Cant hurt to call and ask for current promos.

ive been eyeing the Truxedo Truxport and the usability of the bed is a big deal for me. are there any other roll ups that would be recommended that might be a better quality

I just bought one of these and I'm about to send it back. I've spent 3 evenings trying to install this damn thing and it just doesn't work. It also came slightly damaged with a torn rail seal and a ding near the end cap. I would have lived with those imperfections but after not being able to get it to function properly I'm over it. I am very good at installs and pay attention to detail. I read the instructions many times to make sure I didn't miss anything and watched the install videos a couple of times. Something is just out of spec. It's going back next week. I also don't like that I had to remove the rails even though I knew that before I bought it. Very disappointed in this purchase because I thought it had so much promise. Back to the drawing board.

I would get the Truxport because the tonneau rails sit on top of the bed rails. The TruXedo Lo Pro rails hang on the inside of the bed rails and water gets past them easier. I had a bed mat under my Lo Pro so water would run down the bedrails and under the bed mat.

I am in the same situation here with trying to get a decent tonneau cover without breaking the bank.

I currently have an Advantage Torza Top installed which has been nothing but trouble since day 1 (actually, this one is a replacement for the first one). Both arrived with damaged or torn seals and I was sent replacement seals to repair them. They both leak(ed) horribly even while parked during a slight rain shower. I have attempted to return the current one, however, have been in the middle of a “discussion” between the manufacturer and seller over exactly who is going to do what and when and how. Ready to just take the thing to the county landfill.

I have a Tyger... Cheap and effective. Fits well, brackets seem fine for now. There are plastic parts and I've had it for 2 months, but it seems solidly built. Also dust and water proof.

Best thing is it takes 5 min to take it off when you need to.

The hard ones might be more secure but, as long as you don't put valuables into it while sketchy folks are watching, you'll likely be fine. They usually don't just walk around slicing open random covers. But if you're needing to get something valuable (merchandise or tools) in and out often while in a city environment, the hard shell may make more sense.

I was very happy with my Gator bi-fold. It would let in a little rain, but not much. I kept things in totes, so it was never an issue.

I had it for almost 2 years and there was no sign of anything starting to fall apart.

Also made in Florida I believe.

I got the Truxedo Truxsport and its a good cover in my opinion. But honestly its a good cover for temporary use. The reason i got it cause i dont wanna deal with snow building up on my bed come winter time and i probably wont be having stuff stthe back 95% of the time anyway

I have the Tyger rollup. Very good quality, though after almost a year it’s getting a bit slack and requires a few extra pulls and pushes to get it taut and secure on the Velcro. That’s if you’re OCD like me ... it works fine without that, and even the extra touches take just seconds. I like it because a) it was cheap, less than $200; b) you can roll it up in seconds and effectively get all your bed space open, without blocking rear vision; and c) the soft cover does conform slightly to compressible loads like soft luggage, yard waste etc. Even if it only lasts a few years it’s a good value at the price and could just be replaced for less than some other brands cost to buy once, and was easily installed in about 30 minutes.

I got a Extang Trifecta 2.0 soft fold and it works great so far. Super easy to install and pretty good in sealing the rain from the bed. I also wanted the solid fold - but the soft fold is half the price and I won't be storing anything valuable in the bed most of the time.

Another +1 for the Trifecta 2.0 from me. I wanted a tonneau cover right away. Went to a local truck place and after looking and playing with all the options in person I settled on the soft fold. Had it on since the first week of April and no complaints from me.

It also repels water from the surface very well and I’ve sprayed the Meguiars Hybrid Ceramic Wax on it twice now, and I get more water beading every time. Do be aware that if your truck is sitting on a flat surface some water does pool in small spots between the braces which I expected from a soft top.

I was so impressed with my father taking his trifecta through the carwash multiple times (after 3 years of having it on the truck) to find everything in the bed bone dry, I got one for my truck too, no complaints, easy to install and remove, very durable, and very water resistant. In my opinion, long story short you get what you pay for, which is why the trifecta costs so much.

Beautiful truck, almost identical to mine with the exception of the sliders.
