so i am in the process of rebuilding my performance series king coil overs and before the rebuild, everyone said to just remove the metal spacer. I get into the shock and there is no metal spacer.

so i am asking what parts do i remove for this?
I am positive it is the black bushing and metal washer in between the piston and the seal head, but would that cause problems when the shock quickly unloads (hit a hole and tire drops out from under the truck) as the piston comes down and contacts the seal head? is that a problem?

The difference between regular and extended (front shock) is the thickness of that rubber bushing. You do not want to get rid of it all together, cut it down or replace it with Kings "extended travel" version.

    ok thanks,

doing some more research and comparing what kits have the rubber bushing. as an example, this triple bypass they rebuild has no bushing between the seal head and the piston. i am thinking it is because this triple has no spring attached to it.

ill keep looking for more examples from what ive seen but none have this rubber bushing.

Yep, that and as you surmised the shock is the limiting droop factor for the IFS front and they generally have a fair bit of preload at full extension.

Ok, correct. I guess I need to figure out exactly if mine are currently extended travel. If they are. I had been running stock uppers for over 3.5 years with no problems. I just replaced my stock uppers with built right unis for the ride and I wanted to change out to extended coil overs. But I may already have them.

I guess the real thing would be to wait for king to open up again on Monday. - Along with sending me the correct rebuild kit for these. (They sent me seals for a tripple bypass.... WTF???).

    King specs for lengths are
    Compressed 15.325
    Extended. 19.5

Subtract the two you get 4.17

My measurement using calipers from the bottom of the seal to the top of the lower blue mount. (I.e., length of exposed shaft to travel.) is 4.28"

So ether my shocks are a just under 1/8" longer travel. WHOOP-D-DOO.

those are the old style standard travel. the new style has a bump built into the seal head. for yours you would remove the machined spacer to make it an extended travel. the internal bumps are an OE thing.
you wont find a thinner bump as stated above in a comment.

Not to bump an old thread, but seemed better than starting a brand new thread.
Picked up some used 1st Tacoma king coilovers that I'm rebuilding.

Mine don't have that rubber piece just this metal spacer.
Do I remove that to make it extended travel?

using the shock as the downward travel limiter will eventually destroy the shock, thats what straps are for.

Fair enough, but tons of people run mid travel setups without straps

It's been awhile but I think 0.5" spacer was standard travel and 0.25" spacer is extended travel. King used to use 2 - 0.25 spacers for ST so its easy to convert to Eat or build it initially.

    Gotcha . Thanks!
So in theory I can just mill it down to .25"

I think so but I would call King to verify. You might have ET shocks and the ST could be 2 of the 0.5" spacers.
