    Hi all,

I have a 2010 Tacoma SR5 that I am attempting to install a Pioneer AVH-1440NEX into with a idatalink maestro rr. I got everything installed and working with the exception of the steering wheel controls. I purchased everything through crutchfield and was on the phone with their support team for over an hour, eventually, they hit closing time and told me to call back tomorrow morning which I am planning on. They told me to reflash the unit again tonight to see if that could get it to work. Unfortunately, I had no such luck. Again, everything works perfectly including the vehicle gauges like tire PSI, etc., but the steering wheel controls do not. I played around with the setting and it looks like the unit isn’t detecting the steering wheel buttons. I attached a pic. Does anyone have any thoughts? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Do you have anything plugged into the OB2 port like a Allstate drivewise? I found out that will mess up the comms between the head unit and ECU

Thanks for the input, but no, nothing else is installed in the port.

I would ensure the 3.5mm jack is plugged in, and also ensure it is actually plugged into the correct port on the radio. I see this a lot so that's always my first check

Are you using the T01 harness?

Hey all, thanks for the input. I think I figured out the problem, but I’m blanking on a solution. My truck only came with the volume up/down, seek track, and mode steering wheel buttons stock on the left side of the horn. I removed the right side blank and added the call answer/hang up and voice command buttons on the right side of the horn yesterday along with the necessary connecting cable. I had followed to tutorial of another member posted on here. I didn’t think this was the issue at first since I figured if it wasn’t working, it would be just the newly added buttons that wouldn’t work. But when I turned on my lights, I noticed none of them were illuminated. So I took the assembly apart and checked all of the connections and they all seem to be good and firmly in place. I can’t think of what else could be causing this. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Did you flash your maestro for the added steering wheel buttons?

Yes, I did. I flashed it for a non-JBL 2010 Tacoma with steering wheel controls on both sides. I thought the maestro was the problem at first, but I’m starting to think it’s something else since the lights aren’t illuminated anymore on the buttons when I turn on the headlights. Thanks for the questions, please keep them coming. It gets the wheels turning.

Actually, upon doing further research on this site, I’ve seen a couple of other threads where people had a similar issue, but they didn’t add in the controls like I did. Same issue of adding in a head unit and the controls no longer work including the buttons not illuminating anymore. Unfortunately, both threads I found are about 5 years old and never had a resolution, but it looks like the OP in one of the threads suspected it was a harness issue behind the head unit. If nothing else, it gives me more hope for my call tomorrow morning with crutchfield. If any of you have any additional ideas, I’m definitely open to them. Thanks again.

I want to add I didn’t use the 3.5mm on the Marestro RR & I retained steering controls. The Maestro RR sends steering options through the idatalink port on my install.

Can you test the steering controls with a factory radio?

I’m pretty close to you btw. I’m in Mountain View CA.

Thank you to all of you for your input. I finally got it working. The crutchfield team told me repeatedly that I was supposed to have a bunch of empty factory harness plugs when I was done. I finally got them to go through it with me plug by plug and determined that I was missing an adapter from the harness to the factory plug. I’ve included a picture here with the harness in question circled in case anyone runs into a similar problem. It was my completely my fault for missing. The crutchfield readyharness service is worth every penny and I like their customer support, but the harness had absolutely no instructions come with it. Just a slip of paper with their customer service phone number. So it was confusing for a car stereo novice such as myself.

Had the same problem with crutchfield. They forgot to ship all the cables for the Maestro.

So glad I’ve seen your post. I’ve been on the phone with Crutchfield today while attempting to install an Alpine iLX-107 in an FJ Cruiser. I too have been attempting to use the steering wheel controls and although the tech at Crutchfield was attempting to be helpful, he reached at point at which I knew he wanted to say “I’ve done all for you that I can do for you, we need to part company.” Again, he didn’t say that, but after a thirty minute call he also couldn’t offer any more assistance either. I have the same set of adapters with my harness that are un-used. We verbally went through the plugs, wires, and settings but if I have the same problem you have had, I too will have to solve it myself as Crutchfield didn’t get me to a satisfactory conclusion. Still no steering wheel controls but all other functions seem to work fine. Thanks again for posting. I will attempt to find the home of these multi-pin adapters and see if that solves the problem. If it does, I’m probably going to rub Crutchfield’s nose in it . . . Just for my own satisfaction mind you!

After you figured this out were you able to activate Siri with the steering wheel controls? I'm having a hell of a time trying to figure this out.

My issue, hopefully others have seen it… got everything working after replacing a blown PAC controller. Only issue is steering wheel controls stop working…eventually, turn key off for few secs and they work again until they quit again.
