I lost both sets of my keys for my 2015 Tacoma. One I know is lost in the city somewhere, the other is in my house I bet, but I haven't been able to find them for months. They are a regular key that gets inserted into a cylinder and a separate remote for locking. The key is chipped so it is unique to my car. The dealership said it is going to be like $500 bucks for new keys. Fuck.

There is a little icon of a car with a key in it flashing under my touch screen. Please tell me that is telling me my key is close to my car. Is it a warning that I left my keys in my car?

no that light is the anti theft light. call a locksmith they can cut and program keys also for your car for much less than the dealer.

Nope. That's just a warning to the thief that it uses a chipped key. Do you have a dog? Check his poop piles. LOL

A family member just lost a couple hundred in cash. It's somewhere in his house or vehicle two.

Maybe you two should be buds.

OTOH, thanks for the reminder of why I'm thrilled to have a plain ole truck with a plain ole dumb key.

If you have a locksmith do it, here's a step you can do that may save you money. Take your registration and ID to the dealer. Tell them you need the key code for your truck. They can punch your vin into the computer and give you a key code. When you give that key code to the locksmith, it's easy for them to cut the key. Then they just have to program your truck to recognize the chipped key that they grabbed off the peg. If you have towing insurance, get it towed to the locksmith for free and it will be cheaper than having them come out. Make sure the locksmith you choose, can program the truck before you have it towed there.

Also, while you're at the locksmith, have them cut you several cheap plain metal keys. Put 1 in a hide-a-key, 1 in your wallet, 1 under a rock at your house, etc. They'll get you into the truck if the keys get locked inside.

I have one of those. Think I can get a chipped one cut with it? All I'll need is the code from the dealer?

If you have AAA, it will cost you $20 to get a new key made. My daughter lost hers and that is what we did. Hell, it would be worth it to get AAA if you didn't already have it for just the key!

I learned this the hard way, but I keep 1 master key in the safe, 1 master spare that stays on the hook at home, and I only use the valet key in the truck. You can also use a cut, non-chipped key to unlock the door, in case you accidentally lock your keys in the vehicle. I miss the old days of "dumb" keys... :sorry:

If you have a cheap metal key for your truck, you're half way there. The locksmith can cut a chipped key off from your key.

All chipped keys are electronically different. The truck computer gets programmed to recognize whatever key you have. Also, it will be easier for the tow guy, since you can get it out of park and unlock the steering.

Was it $20 for a chipped key? Did she call roadside assistance or go to one of their service centers? I have AAA and this would be a big savings. I need to get a 3rd chipped key. I already have one that will get me in the truck.

If you bought it new did you save the little metal tag that comes with the key?

She has a keyless ignition and it was $20-25 for that, the entire remote and the valet key. I was surprised as hell. I think she call roadside assistance (pretty sure she did). However, the old key doesn't work now (yeah, she found it a day later).

I'm old school, I hate the whole 'key chip' scenario...just give me good old-fashioned metal keys that I can get mass produced at my local hardware store for a buck a piece when I lose one.

My wife's Mazda is worse! It has the push button ignition and the car freaks out when I walk back into the house with the engine running (key in my pocket) because I forgot something...

If I can revive this thread... Ive just bought a 2013 and it only came with one key, and it's not the master. Can i still program a replacement key myself? Or do I need the master?
(I've shipped the truck to the Bahamas so now I can't just go to the dealer)
