I had a set of Centerline Champ 500's on my 84 Camaro Z-28 just like the ones in this magazine cover. At the time they were crazy expensive $250 per wheel compared to Crager wheels, Keystone, American Classic even Weld Wheels but they were legit and the only way that I was able to get them as a high school kid was the stock wheels were stolen off my car at the movies and the insurance company handed us a check and I made up the rest of the $$ with my savings. I was stoked to say the least rolling into the schools parking lot with these new shoes on.

Those were the days long before the internet and forums! A picture of one guy effortlessly dropping a rat into a Camaro (notice the carb isn’t even taped off) was all it took to get many folks excited about car projects, and send them (myself included) into the garage grossly unprepared and over their heads. Sure sold a lot of sonic turbos, K&n filters, and slick 50 too.

That was learning through trial by fire... 18 years old, trying to figure out an idle problem on my 1986 Mustang. I pull the EGR valve off to clean it and then decide, maybe if I start it up!?!?! Massive air hole straight into the intake after the throttle body!! Good thing those engines had rev limiters other wise I would have been picking up valve train parts from everywhere... I may have needed to change my shorts too...

My last set of SR8’s were black with metal colored sanded rings, switched to 17’s in the same wheel but gunmetal this time & sanded the rings to metal. I was thinking of painting the inner black, but this color is growing on me.

I went from black to bronze, although frankly I think they both looked good with MGM, I get numerous complements on the current wheels.

Looking good! When you sanded the rings did you clear coat them or what did you do to prevent rusting?

I initially clear coated the rings on my first set, but the coating got scratched up, so I sanded them back down. After a year of use and without any coating, had zero rust or corrosion, left this set bare also.

This is my other set, still dirty but corrosion free after 1+ year, took pic just now.

My other option that I’m still considering, going back to paint wise on the new 17’s. These are 16’s.

Lastly, the old set from my 2019 Taco with sanded ring also (yeah, I can’t leave anything alone).

PS, I don’t work for SCS, but apparently like their products.
