My father in law is selling a 2014 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport Extended Cab with 167,000 miles on it. He says trade-in value on it is $20,000 so he’s looking for at least that but is giving me first dibs. I am about to graduate college in May and have been looking for a truck, specifically a Tacoma because I have heard great things about their reliability and gas mileage for a truck.

He is the second owner, but I also know the original owner, an older man I went to church with, and they take care of their vehicles. It's clean inside and out, and has been regularly maintained. What is it worth? How much life does it have left?

$20K is definitely not the "help out your daughter and son in law" price. Taking on a $20K debt when you're about to graduate college is nuts. If you're living in a rented house, it's really nuts.

Knowing the history of the truck and how it was treated is a plus, I would first look up what KBB says it’s worth in your area and that will give you Idea if it’s priced right.

If it’s taken care of, it’ll last you a long long time. 167k is nothing compared to how far these will go. 2014 is a good year too, towards the end of the 2nd gen cycle.
As far as worth, it seems to vary greatly depending on where you live, but $20k seems high to me for a 6 year old truck with those miles.
Make sure you know about the frame rust issues and extended warranty program.

    KBB isn’t accurate.

Take the truck to carmax or one of those places, they’ll give you a quote for what they’ll buy it for. Using that as your absolute bottom, do the research and see what other trucks are going for in your area.

I wonder where he got his $20k trade in number from. Sounds like it’s more wishful thinking to me.
For reference, I paid $25k for mine when it was also 6 years old, but only had 27k miles on it.

The truck will sell for what someone will pay. The majority of people use KBB. The majority of people do not know what car max is.

My 2013 4x4 Double cab with only 98k miles was getting trade in quotes of 17k from dealers. Car max was around 18.5 and Carvana did 19.

I don’t think 20k is realistic on trade in for one year newer but at 167k miles.

Sounds like a good truck, but KBB is your best friend here. Trade in value tends to be a bit higher that private sale value. Check around at other Tacoma’s for sale in your area and see what’s out there as a comparison.
Don’t be afraid to pass on his offer if it doesn’t suit what you want/ are willing to pay even if he is family.

For the year, sounds like a great deal. For the miles, not at all in my opinion. NOT saying it won't last another 20 years and 200,000 miles. Just think that you can find a lower mileage truck for that much money...

What are you driving now? Do you even need a new vehicle? @Muddinfun and @whatstcp are right that for someone just graduating there may be smarter ways to be spending (or not spending) your money right now.

    I’d pass on that one.

Great things about the gas mileage?
    Maybe on a 2wd 2.7 5 lug.

Don’t get your hopes up on any Tacoma 4x4 getting GREAT fuel mileage.

Hard pass. Spend an hour looking at 2nd gens in your area and you'll see it's probably 5k too high.
