Hey guys, I could really use your knowledge to help me with this situation I’m in.

I took my truck to Dublin Toyota last week because the check engine light came on. Fast forward 5 days later and they are sending parts of the engine over to a shop to pressure test .

If I’m remembering this correctly, they are looking for pitting. The service advisor said that he has seen this a bit lately with Japanese engines and the metal not being compatible with cheap gas (he said he didn’t hear this from Toyota, just other mechanics) So they are looking for pressure leaks.

If they find a problem, they will try and fix it or rebuild the engine.

Everything is covered under warranty but I’m not trying to have a rebuilt engine. I bought a brand new Tacoma for the complete opposite reason, the reliability. Truck had under 31k miles on it when I dropped it off.

    what are my options here?

    What are your options?

You have no options, Toyota will fix the truck and you'll move on with life as many do. If you're looking for the best V6 the 1st gen is what you're looking for. The 4.0 and 3.5 both have problems

I’ve been with Mercedes Benz 20 years and I’m sure the warranty procedure is similar, unless they can justify a complete engine replacement it’s going to be rebuilt. Things happen, I’ve seen 100k cars with under 10k miles needing complete engine tear downs.

At the least, argue for a warranty extension..I've heard of people getting that

Well. You do not currently have a new engine. You have one with 31k miles on it. They do not owe you a new long block or short block. If it’s complete rebuild it basically new once done.

Do you have the 2.7? I know that’s the only Japanese motor in a Tacoma

The warranty is a performance contract...their obligation is to make you whole again which is what they are doing.

I'd love to know what the diagnosis was in relation to 'pitting'. How is pitting requiring a engine rebuilt? Also, never heard of cheap gas causing 'pitting'.

    Exactly !!!

mechanics just standing around kibitzing & come up with ' Pitting ' ????????

    What component was ' pitted ' ?????

NOT heard of from Toyota ................is a red flag

How do they know it was cheap gas..................... the owner could have been using availible good gas

1st & Last a fickle gas cap sensor will throw a ' check engine ' light
does NOT result in an engine rebuild

Yeah, that part sounds like bs to me. Their a 4 stroke not a 2 stroke. 4 strokes tolerate low octane fuel far better, plus theres sensors that feed computers to compensate for any low grade fuel.

just a shitty feeling to have knowing I bought it new 3 hrs ago and took good care of it and this happens.

When I was at Nissan oil consumption tests had us checking for pitting. Never seen it at Toyota.
