I gave a 2nd gen 2008 toyota tacoma v6 with over 200,000 mile on it.. been having overheating issues lately. Temp will spike and then normalize. Coolant is definitely boiling inside radiator. Refilled coolant and runs great around town. Any drive over an hour and it starts to overheat! Truck goes into the shop tomorrow. But this morning when the wife started it up it sounds loud! Almost like exhaust leak, air leak or loud fan sound. Any thoughts????

Ah OK. If you don't have time to diagnose yourself you should take it to a shop, could be a couple things but I'd start with the thermostat.

If I were you I would visually inspect the cooling system for coolant level, coolant leaks, restricted airflow through the radiator, loose belts, and pinched or restricted hoses.
The noise sounds like your fan clutch is engaged.

But, since you are taking the truck to the dealer tomorrow, this thread is kinda irrelevant…

If it were me??…. I’d just slap a new thermostat in there and see if it fixes it for $15.00 instead of going to the shop and getting slammed!! You could also have a air pocket if you’ve ever flushed the radiator and maybe you have some air in the line, Take off the radiator cap and the overflow cap and turn the Heat all the way too HOT and the fan full blast for about 10 minutes or until it reaches full running temperature and squeeze the upper & lower radiator hoses from time to time (with a towel because they’ll be hot to the touch) to remove air…. Once you’ve ran it with the heater on high and the fan full blast for enough time than put the radiator cap on and the overflow cap on so that when you shut off the engine the coolant doesn’t get all over the floor or your truck and shot it off and let it cool down for an hour or so? Check the FAN CLUTCH as it very well could be beat and not kicking on which isn’t too hard to replace and take it from their. Hopefully this will help you out?? Good luck but I’ll bet ya almost anything it’s the thermostat or the fan clutch.. if it were me I’d just do both and call it DONE!!

Had the truck in the shop 2 weeks ago with over temp issues, they ran some tests and determined it was radiator cap, they replaced it. Next trip up to the mountains it overheated again. Taking it to another shop for these issue but the noise started this morning and wanted to try to get a better idea of what may be going on prior to taking it in. Always like to be somewhat knowledgeable on the issues prior to service. Thinking it may be a tensioning bearing.

With the somewhat high mileage was thinking it may be a good idea to just start replacing the hole cooling system, from a new radiator, pump, hoses, belt etc

BE CAREFUL taking that radiator cap off when the engine is hot!!! You DONT want boiling antifreeze all over your face, just be careful..

Got word back from the shop that the header gasket has failed and will need to be replaced, Quoted at $6700.00 to fix. Seems crazy high. anyone have thoughts going to search forum looks like this has been discussed prior. But with Covid it seems more difficult to find crate/ rebuilt motors.
