I just bought this 2021 tacoma (silver sky metallic) a month ago it only has 20,000 miles on it. Today i washed it and found large spot on the roof and also these smaller spots on the hood and passenger access cab door (no its not bird shit, sap or water spots) about half the one on the roof and the one on the door feel rough but the ones on the hood feel smooth. Is the clear coat failing or did something else cause this? Thanks for any insight.

It's clearcoat failure, but that is way too specific to be general paint damage from the factory. That looks like a blob of bird crap sat on it or something else that splashed on it. With you just getting it I wouldn't be shocked if that was existing damage.

I agree with you on the roof but what about the the hood and passenger door? that's what doesn't make sense to me.

Definitely brake fluid, happened on a brand new Harley, looked just like that. Doesn’t mean you did it but someone did.

Something got on that, and damaged the paint. I had to get the hood on my 2nd gen re-painted after something that looked like bird poop ate the paint in three places. If it was bird poop, I don't think I want to know what it was eating.

Who knows, not since I've owned it. Ive only driven it 500 mi and it's been garage kept. Both when I checked it out and then the day I bought it, it was overcast and I didn't see the spots on the hood and door but you can see them pretty well in the bright sunshine (never thought to look on the roof) I was more concerned with the frame, body lining up (gaps in door, fenders, hood etc.) just to make sure it hadn't been in a unreported accident. It only had 19,200 miles on it so it never really crossed my mind to inspect the paint with a magnifying glass for issues.

Maybe scope out a reputable auto detailer and see if they can do a full clay bar, buff, detailing job. Can’t hurt to try…ymmv

Looks like egg on the roof for sure, no fixing that without repair/refinish. Hard to tell with the rest but, looks similar. Good luck! Ski

ugh that sucks, sorry to see this!
I have to admit, while I usually check things over well and take a used to my buddy for inspection, I got hasty buying a used Sequoia. I later climbed up on the damn thing to clean the roof, and found the shark fin style antenna was broken, and even worse??? The sheet metal roof was dented in, it looked like it was damaged in a wash. Big forken mistake, but admitting fault in hopes others will learn from our mistakes and not go through the same thing.
Since it's so new, you might take it back to the dealer and see if they will help. It doesn't hurt to ask, while doubtful, they may make it right.

Was it purchased CPO from Toyota? If so I would be back there ASAP. A good dealer might help you out, given that it was just purchased.

Then as much as it sucks, this is on OP for going through with the purchase.

Honestly if it was me, I’d look into selling it, recouping what I can, purchasing a CPO/new one in mint condition. That damage is unacceptable on a $35k+ truck.

    4 run, 2 don't

Not laughing at you OP, vehicles have gone through the "CPO" process with similar paint issues or other cosmetic blemishes

The CPO process consists of a thorough mechanical inspection and ensuring functionality of the many equipped items on a vehicle

The damage shown there is not one that happens through oxidation, etc and is the result of things not covered even if it was a brand new vehicle
