The long aluminum heat shields above the exhaust pipes are rattling and driving me crazy. About a good three feet of them. Is it possible to just take them off? There's two of them. Has anyone done this? Nuts seem to be rusted/frozen and the shield is just hanging by one intact rusted bolt.

Very possible to take them off. But then you run the risk of heating up other stuff that shouldn’t run that hot. And your interior cab getting hot during idle.

Cats run over 1,000 degrees on average, you don’t want that heat radiating into your cab

I think I have the same issue. There's a nut on them I tried to tighten down and it doesn't seem to help. It's driving me insane, it's like a low grunt.

The one over my drivers side cat was rattling for a while and it eventually fell off. No issues yet but I wouldn't mind replacing it if i can figure out the part number for it. Toyota parts diagrams are confusing. Anybody know the part number or even which diagram to look at? Ik its not the exhaust diagram.

A lot of people will place a large washer in there to hold it on

I used a hose clamp maybe a couple of them run together to get the diameter.
    Been on for years.

I think they're talking about the ones above the exhaust, attached to the underside of the cab with a couple nuts. Technically they're called "Floor Insulators". The heat shield on the drivers side cat that's held on with a clamp that goes around the exhaust is something different but my truck doesnt have that anymore either lol.

The one that rattles for me is inaccessible without removing exhaust which is so rusted it will be a big job.. annoying.

Yeah I was thinking that about mine too. None of the nuts were holding it up anymore and it was just wedged between the exhaust and the underside of the cab, I didn't think there was any way for it to fall off but sure enough it fell off on the trail a couple weeks ago. I think im just gonna stick some of this up there instead of replacing it. Don't feel like dealing with those rusted nuts. https://www.amazon.com/Thermo-Tec-1...e+heat+shield&qid=1559236523&s=gateway&sr=8-3

As many have heard rattles underneath their trucks look at the exhaust heat shields as they corrode and the holes gets too big so you have to take the nut off and add larger washers to hold them up. I added 2 washers with upper most 1 with a larger hole to fit over the stud post first so next washer will lock the heat shield tight (when you have the nut off you will see what I mean). The catalytic converter under the drivers side on 4x4 have a 2 piece heat shield and those usually have the 2 bolts rush out and then a thin muffler clamp (2 1/2 inch) holding it on. It protects the front driveshaft and boot. I used a 2 3/4 stainless hose clamp instead of a muffler clamp which looked like overkill as a lightweight shield and the 2 bolts hold it clamped around the cat.

Thanks man! I did some searching after posting that and I was able to find it. Guess i didnt look hard enough. But i dont really want to pay the 50 bucks lol i ended up ordering an adhesive heat shielding thing from Amazon that I'm gonna put in its place. It's like the same kinda stuff that car guys use to line their trans tunnel or engine bay

My 2008 2.7L Base Tacoma got to rattling, but I was fortunate, mine were not aluminum. I rolled out my MIG, hit the missing bolt hole with a quick tack and my problem was immediately solved.

They don't even function until 400 to 600 degrees and operate between 1,200 and 1,600 F. Sweet Cheebus that is hot!
