I learned that I can trace the rattle with engine off. Hit exhaust pipe sideways with fist or rubber mallet, & sure enough the rattle is in the heat shield. Any photos or a weld or some way to keep the heat shield and silence this rattle? Local gas station tried using a long flat screwdriver and hammer to slightly dent the end of the shield. Sorta reduced it, but not a cure. Anyone got a good fix for this??

    The fasteners rust out
See if you can get the shield off
I replaced the fasteners with bolts and nylock nuts from HD
Did it a few months ago no problem yetB1413B3E-EA51-4FB0-8530-69F244421D43.jpg

I was going to suggest that but I didn’t want to be a dick.
Cause I did the same thing.
99% of customers just wanted my cutting wheel repair..

    Hmm . . . none as yet, that's why i'm here . . .
Couple of long worm type hose claps, put them both together to make one long ass clamp then use that the secure heat shield.

I tore mine off many moons ago. Nothing but the sound of aftermarket headers and exhaust now.

tacofish's photo clearly shows two U-shaped stays that sit inside the heat shield. These stays don't show up in the parts diagram (see part number 184350P020), so my local Toyota parts department says they don't know what to order. Has anyone found a part number for these stays? Or failing that, has anyone replaced the heat shield without these stays?
    Thanks for any help.

Worm clamps and forget about it. Stick a few large hose clamps together, long enough to go all the way around the shields and the cat. Tighten the clamp. Fixed.

lol, former subaru tech advice... a old bolts jammed into the right places like just slightly larger than the vent/drain holes and set home with the impact usually stop rattles. or grab the cheap welder and blast a few tacks

or like everyone else said remove, or replace bolts and stuff some steel wool around under the shields, put back together.

Mine was the heat shield going around exhaust right behind the drivers side tire. There was a bolt that had rusted through. Only heard it when first accelerating. Not when coasting or stopped.
If you accelerated to fast or were going over certain speed I never heard it.
My dad hit that heat shield with a rubber hammer and heard the noise and found the missing bolt.
That heat shield is alot thinner and the noise was real high-pitched. Kind of like a bee buzzing.
Putting a new bolt in and will see if it gets better

My experience has been to replace the hardware. That being said mine (left side) has started rattling again. I'm waiting until it is warm enough to address it yet again.
Either remove it or deal with it every oil change.
