Headlights supposed to stay on when truck is off?

Are the the headlights and tail lights supposed to turn off when the truck is off but the switch is still on? Just noticed mine are staying on with truck off and switch on, all lights are working when selected on the switch they just don't turn off when truck is off. I could have sworn they turned off with the truck off and the manual seems to support this, but I know all my other cars, up to the taco, would stay on with the car off and give a warning chime. The truck is only driven on weekends and not very often at night so I don't use the headlight very often.
    Thanks!

On my 15' The switch position of the lights can be left on and they will turn off with the truck. Then of course turn back on when you start the truck. However when the truck is off, if you cycle the switch to the off position then back on you will have lights. Dont if that helps- if they are staying on there is probably a relay out.

Hmmm, mine will turn on and off when I turn the switch with the truck off, but don't turn off with the truck. I guess a visit to the dealer is in order since it's still under warranty.
    Thanks

They should go out when you open the door.

    Thanks

Do you mean the light stays on when the door is opened after turning "off" the truck?

Something that I figured out with my 06 is that opening the door to turn off the lights is a 1 shot deal. If you open the door with the engine running, and then shut off the engine, the lights will stay on. You've already used your 1 shot and no amount of opening and closing the door will make them go out. You have to close the door and turn the truck on and off to get another shot.

Yep, headlights switched on, truck ignition off, key out, door open, lights still on.

This is exactly what my 13 is doing too. I could have sworn, the lights would turn off when I turned the truck off (switch left on). I'm glad i'm not the only one experiencing this issue.

Question for (OP). Did you do the fog light MOD?, I did and this is when I noticed my lights staying on, I also switched to LED headlights. Just wondering.

Nope, all stock lights. The only electrical mod was hooking up the third brake light on the topper. That was done in sept of 2014 with about 500 miles on the truck

This is how mine work. When I turn the truck off the headlights stay on until I open the door. I wouldnt doubt that it might be different with different years.

The headlights will stay on when you flip them on after you shut the truck off. If they are on when you shut the truck off they should go off when you open the door. If they remain on youcould have a short. Also make sure you don't have any burned out bulbs. Some cars do weird stuff when more than one light burns out.

I think I read somewhere that if the passenger door is opened first the headlights will stay on if the switch is left on. If the drivers door is opened first the headlights will go out with the switch on. I could be wrong but I think that's how it works. I just turn the switch off when I get out of my truck.

On my 2015 AC the door switch that activates ON/OFF the dome lights also shuts OFF my headlights. On my Access cab, when I open the door, you have the door latch hook, a black kind of rocker switch and a push button covered in rubber on the door frame (not the door). With the door open, your dome light switch towards the passenger, it activates the dome light ON/OFF. This same switch shuts OFF your head light when leaving the Tacoma. If this rubber covered switch is defective, neither your dome lights nor your headlights will be affected by the position of the switch.

I am not sure if this is clear, just waking up from the back shift LOL

Not much yet, but do have Flowmaster exhaust, with Rockford Fosgate P600.1Bd 600 RMS Mono amp for my 12" P3 with custom box and a Punch P400-4 Four Channel amp for my mids and highs running 100 watts per channel and have two speakers on each channel, not to mention 6 more hooked to the 4 channels from the headunit as well....Hopefully soon will be a body lift with new tires, and eventually the actual suspension...
My dome light works more with my ignition than my door...It will stay on until the ignition is turned out of lock, and will turn back on as soon as either it's back in lock or the key is taken out, but I think if you don't put the key in the ignition it'll go off by itself like in 30 sec.

Bringing back this dead post with a different data point.

    2012 Access Cab

Headlights turn off when the switch goes from ON to ACC/OFF.

I have not figured out a way to turn the headlights back on w/o the key in the ignition turned to the ON position.

Tried everything from turning the lights off to on again, also tried opening and closing the door. Nothing works w/o the Key inside the ignition turned to the ON position.

Most perplexing and annoying default behavior.

Is there more on this on another thread. I have to manually shut my lights because they were staying on too long.
