Headlight protection film?

Anyone have experience with this? Does it actually work or just a gimmick? 3M, Lamin-X, WeatherTech?

 

my 2007 tacoma had the 3m clear bra on the headlights, fog lights, bumper and a few other front areas for 13 years (sold it in 2020) and the headlights still looked like brand new. the clear bra was not faded or peeling at all, i would recommend it... the reason i had the clear bra installed though is because i drove a highway that had gravel put down on it in the winter when icy and i wanted protection from the rock dings.

 

Any protective film will reduce output. Some can suffer from UV breakdown and hazing and may not remove easily causing damage to the headlight lens effectively negating whatever benefit they were trying to provide. You can get wax-on like temporary coatings that are not-permanent to help reduce UV fade, but no help against chipping.

 

I've found that lamin-x is too thick and difficult to get around the tight curves.

 

I have been using Lamin-X for over 15 years on glass headlights.
I bought sheets since Lamin-X doesn’t make precut film for the 3ed Gen Tacoma. So I made a paper template of my Tacoma headlights where I would have the most coverage, and cut out the film. I have no problems installing it as I am not needed if to wrap the top part of the headlight. I replace it every 3 years and my plastic lens looks brand new from the Colorado high elevation UV exposure and rock chips.

I put the Weathertech on my wife's '15 Escape and the headlights look just like they did the day we took delivery. I have put it on my '22 Taco and yes, it is a bit of a pain to install on the curved headlights but it looks great. Time will tell!
