This happened to my other cars, but I didn't care. However, I've invested a lot of time and energy into my Tacoma. What's happening here, and how do I fix it/prevent it from happening again?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I think there’s a clear coat on them, and it appears to be failing. I’d see if you can get them replaced under warranty.
I just noticed my passenger side rear taillight has splintered cracks. My buddy that works in the industry thinks it’ll covered and was most likely due to condensation getting in and freezing.

It's actively happening on mine as well. It's a clear coat on the lens to prevent yellowing oxidation.

I would see if you can get them replaced under warranty, before you go putting some compound on them. I could see them denying due to your attempt to repair.

My 4Runner did that after 8 years. You should warranty it.

Center console divider thingy, rubber bed mat and side steps for the wife.
If you are still under warranty, get them replaced. They will only get worse.

It needs to be wet sanded, feathering out the edges and re clear the whole light. No kit is going to fix the flaking edges unless it sanded and new clear paint is the only way and not this bull crap kits they sell.

If it’s not under warranty there are plenty listed here on the classifieds for cheap. I’ve been trying to sell my factory lights for over a month with no success and I’m practically trying to give them away.

So this happens recently on my headlights. I tried using a headlight restorations kit and the sand paper in the kit wasn’t enough to take the clear coat completely off. So I went tour and bought a variety pack of wet sand paper. I started with 300 grit to take the clear coat off. Then I moved up to 600, then 1000 grit. Once you have your headlight sanded and it’s looking good. Hit it with a coat of clear. Boom your done. Picture posted of the before and after on the passenger side, and just an after on the driver side

Mine were doing this in the corners. Not even close to this bad and I was able to warranty them.

I have a set in new condition from a 2020 with the LED daytime running lights for $150. If you have an SR5 I have the harness as well.

First step try to get replacement under warranty. If not, I'd remove them from the truck and have a body shop restore them. Or try to DIY. The best way is to sand them down properly and clear coat them.

I’d love to know who the vendor was for those lights.

I would snap these up. Restoration never last long, you'll be chasing the problem, as long as you have the truck.
