Heading there this weekend and was wondering if some one could point me in the right direction on which trails to hit.
I'm in a stock 3rd gen trdor with wildpeaks.
Looking to keep it safe and upright, and have a nice spot to camp.

Are you looking for a dispersed camping site or an actual camp site with a bathroom near? if dispersed then pick a gravel road pull off, drive around for a while and find a place that suites you needs, stop off at the visitors center tho first and buy an off road trail pass, if your looking for a camp site, im not sure whats still open. Angostura in Custer state park I believe is still open, price should run you around 20 ish a night, or you can try any of the camp sites near Deer Field Lake, or Sheridan lake.

What is an "off road trail pass"? I understand the premise, but what does it get you? Perhaps a get out of jail card if you're caught 4x4'ing?

just a way for south dakota to nickel and dime you..... there are trails in the hills that are only authorized to vehicles with the access permit (off road pass) if you're caught by the forest service with out it, im sure a fine would be expected.

Yeah the Offroad trail pass is geared more towards quads and ORVs. There are endless trails you can drive around on for free... just watch out for cows.. they free range there so they are everywhere. If you go to the national forest website you can get maps that show you all the trails you can and can’t be on as well as all the free dispersed camping spots.

They're not trails, but if you've never been there before, definitely do the Needles highway loop (16A) and Custer park. It's a pretty gorgeous area. Custer Game Lodge has awesome food. And be sure to stop at Sylvan lake and walk around, maybe do a hike up to Black Elk.

Castle Peak campground is my favorite camping area in the Black Hills. It's a campground, but it's fairly remote and you typically only see offroad vehicles there. It's free, but it's first-come-first-serve. Fantastic spot to camp.

As far as trails go - considering you're stock (and solo?) it's probably best to just go exploring the back roads. You'll have fun.

You can definitely find some hairy trails just north of Pactola and around Riley Hill. And then there's Camp 5 of course.
