Its time for an oil change and I'm wondering which I should go with. My truck has 90,xxx miles on it and I've had it since 67,xxx miles on it in 2012. I've always either gone to the dealer or go to an "express lube" place. I've had a buddy of mine change it a couple of times and I used Havoline 5W30. I'm planning on going to his house where he can change the oil but before I bought any I was going to ask which do you prefer, Havoline conventional oil or should I go Mobil 1 5W30 full synthetic? The Mobil 1 says for high mileage. The Havoline is $13.24 for 5qt and Mobil 1 is $25.47 for 5qt at Walmart. Is going for the Mobil 1 better or since I've never put synthetic in it, I should probably stay away from it. What are your thoughts? Oil capacity for 08 4.0L is 5.5qt correct?

5.4qt IIRC. I always buy the gallon and 1 single qt. In hindsight, maybe two gallons and use the rest for next oil change

All oils sold in the U.S. have to meet the 2011 GF5 standard. Synthetics and most synthetic blends already met that standard, but now, even conventional oils meet the standard. What I'm saying is that you really can't buy a bad oil, but I would suggest using synthetic, because most damage to an engine occurs at start up and synthetics flow better when cold. JMO.

There is almost NO consensus on anything at TW! The message here is: do you OWN research - form your OWN opinion - then, you can share it on TW when some other poster wants to know what oil to use - LOL

dont go for high mileage stuff... IMO

I vote for 0w-30 Mobil 1.... yes ZEROw-30 ... no point to run 5w-30 when 0w-30 is the same cost and offers better protection on startup. Even in warm climates.... 0w-30 is still thicker than the 30 weight at operating temperature... but its much thinner than 5w at the same temp and MUCH MUCH thinner than 5w-30 conventional at the same temp.

I completely agree with this! As for a suggestion, I'd say Mobil 1, I've been inside motors that have had nothing but Mobil and they are clean enough to eat off of. My Tacoma gets nothing but Mobil, every 5k.

Havoline's darn good oil. Has been for many years. But I remember several years back when I changed the valve cover gaskets on my old 96 Camry 3.0 V-6. (Now my work car). That's supposed to be the 'sludge-monster,' engine. At the time of the gasket change it had 288,000 miles. The internals of both heads and valve covers were spotless. No sludge anywhere...none. I was so impressed I took pictures. Mileage is now 330,000. I bought the car new and the oil then and now is Mobil-1, changed at 5,500 to 8,000 mile invervals and it still uses no oil between changes. Needless to say my wife's new Subaru Forester turbo and my 2008 2.7L Tacoma both have Mobil-1 in them. Everything I own except the 6.7L diesel Super Duty get Mobil-1.
