i need ideas for a way to keep my 2 dogs in the back of the truck. i cant tie them up as they will just get twisted up and wondering if there is a cheaper way other than a camper shell.

Safest way would be a crate that’s strapped down.

You can never erase the memory of a dog jumping out of the back of the truck at highway speed. Please put your pups in crates and secure them.

Buy a softtopper - can prob find one used for$400ish. Then tie down their kennel or let them just be in the back. Cheaper than getting a canopy

Before I bought my shell, I had a piece of yellow chain from Tractor Supply on double clasps from side to side on the front tie downs. Then shorter pieces that I could connect to that chain anywhere at any length I wanted to. With one dog a piece hooked in the middle, just long enough for him to look over the side, with 2 dogs just shorten the chain and move it to the sides. I also used it to secure jerry cans to the front of the bed. Very effective.

Yep, unrestrained but trained dogs riding in the flatbed are common where I presently live. All good until one decides to suddenly do a “Superman” out of a flatbed. Dog jumped out in front of me from the flatbed of a truck doing 45 plus. Pulled over, secured and performed c spine precautions on a boogie board, died as we pulled it to roadside. Driver drove away with a second unrestrained dog in her flatbed. I now show my dash cam footage to animal owners. Could not understand driver’s reasoning.

I bow hunt, harvest animals as humanely as possible.. Just saddened from a preventable accident of a yelping dog in the middle of a road.

Check your state laws most states have strict rules about dogs in pickup beds.

I don’t leave my dogs in the bed, it’s not safe. They ride in the back seats, the bed isn’t designed for safety, I’m too paranoid that I’ll get rear ended, or get into a rollover. Any highway speed crash is almost guaranteed death back there. I personally think people who ride with dogs in their truck beds are trash and it’s one of the many reasons I like dogs more than their owners.

I bought a softopper to take care of this. Trying to fit my pitbull and my motion-sickened GSD on the rear seats, was not cutting it. After cleaning my GSD's vomit and hair 5 times inside the cab, I decided to buy the softopper lol. Surprisingly, both my dogs enjoy being back there and I have them each secured to an anchor point.

When I was a kid, we rode in the back of the truck all the time. Usually about 6 or 7 of us. Of course it was always down neighborhood roads and not in the highway. Times have changed though.

I carry my dogs in a crate in the bed, filled with pillows and securely strapped down.

Please post the link to that report... & did you really just compare a dog to a human child?! Come on, man... No... Stop that.
