I'm thinking about buying a 10 foot kayak (specifically the Vibe Yellowfin 100) for fishing some local rivers. How do y'all haul your kayaks in your short bed?

I forgot to add that a hitch mounted bed extender is not an option because I have a RakAttach and a 1Up rack.

I'm thinking about just throwing it in the back (with the tailgate up or down) and ratchet strapping it down.

Hitch extender, roof rack or trailer. Take your pick.

What about folding kayaks? I have a Folbot Kiawah and it's awesome. Unfortunately, that company is no longer in business, but there are others out there.

For a 10ft kayak you dont need to use a bed extender. I keep the tailgate up and strap down. Doesn't stick out much.

I also haul a 10ft pelican bassraider. I do that with tailgate down. No need for extender.

For a 10' kayak just throw it on the bed, on a bed rack or on a roof rack. I have a 12' boat, Old Town Topwater PDL and just throw it in my 6' bed for shorter trips. For longer trips or offroad I do use a bed extender for extra support but it's probably not necessary. If I had a 10' boat I wouldn't even think twice about a bed extender.

If you are considering doing it with the tailgate down then you wouldn’t have your bikes, and a 10’ with the gate down in your truck is fine. Gate up and bikes mounted? You’ll want a roof rack.

I haul my ascend 10t everywhere in my taco. Shouldn’t really be a issue honestly if you strap it right. I believe it actually measure is 10’2”, the kayak overall length.

I'm an ACLB, but this adds support length for any size:

BTW, Costco has a killer in-store deal on an updated version of my 10ft'er.

Pretty good question. I have a ten foot two kayak and was wondering how well a short bed would carry it.

Do you have other pictures? Think you could squeeze another kayak in there? I have a bed rack, 18 voodoo, and have been wondering if I could fit kayaks under there. Rack isn't mounted right now so haven't tried myself. Trying to keep the top open for a rtt. Been thinking about a roof rack or inflatable kayaks if they won't fit in the bed with everything else.

Unfortunately I don’t have any other picture of it loaded like that. If I took my soft topper off I probably could make two work but you better not drive too fast lol

Edit: Rather then be safe then sorry, get a bed extender or hitch extender and you’ll be good to go.

Not a short bed, but they are 15' yaks too. Solid at interstate speeds. (I have better flagging than what's in the pic)

If you are hauling bikes at same time, you'll have to have the gate up and then just strap it down over the gate.

I haul two 10 ft perceptions in my short bed regularly. I have also hauled six 12 ft 2x6s and a 14 ft wood pallet. You can haul almost any length that you aren't worried about clipping with your tail in a turn using one simple trick. Put the items in your bed tailgate down. Wrap a strap around said items or item at 1/3 the distance extending out the bed. Leave loose. Attach second strap to two bed cleats so the hooks are above the items being hauled. Slide that strap between the one wrapped around the cargo. Tighten the first strap first. Tighten the second strap until you see the cargo lift slightly. The cargo is pinched between the fwd bed and first strap. It can't fall because the second strap is lifting it. I do it all the time. Can't fall unless your strap or cleats break.

Bed extender if possible. If you just use the bed with the tailgate down, I would not haul a longer one with half of the length sticking out unsupported. Don't forget a red flag so drivers behind you don't smack into you.
