I feel like I already know the answer to this, but curious if anyone has done this with regrets, particularly on an automatic. How's fuel economy? How's the rev range?

Backinfo: I've been on 35s for a while and on stock 4.1gears. I hoped completing my turbo and Haltech conversion would allow me to sort of circumvent the torque drop, but the effect remains - lugging from a standstill. So I'm coming to grips with either going back to 30" tires or regearing. I'm leaning towards 4.88s since I'm planning on going back down to 33s on my next set, but RPM/traction wise in theory 5.29s could put me on at the limits of 33s

Other question, what's all entailed in DIYing a gear swap if I get a Nitro kit

I can’t help fully here, but I’ll share my experience.

I’m running an auto 4cyl with 31.6” tires. My truck came stock with 4.10s and it really struggled sometimes from a stop and also on the highway. I also thought about adding power but others here talked me into regearing.

I went with 4.56 from ECGS and the improvement is remarkable. The truck accelerates much easier and feels much more comfortable on the highway (75-85mph) here in AZ. This puts me almost exactly at the stock ratio, so my speedometer reads correctly now, and I sit just below 3k rpm at 80, which is where I wanted to be.

4.88 might be better with 33s, I almost went with those, but didn’t want my rpm too high on the highway with my tire size. I’d use an online calculator to determine what ratio you’d want.

As for the labor, I thought about the route you mentioned, but realized that setting everything correctly may be beyond me, so I went with assembled diffs. There’s also a guy up in Phoenix who will do the swap for you if you bring him the diff and parts.

4.88 and 33" tires is totally fine with an auto but it is too much gear with a manual, at least on the hwy. Something to keep in mind is that the 5.29 gearset is physically the weakest so even if you did want to be at 3300rpm at 65mph on the hwy it might still be in danger of grenading on a boosted takeoff.

I regret not going 5.29. 4.88 was cool til I added more weight. I'm a manual though.

I did read that but wasn't clear on the why it's the weakest

What tire size? Automatics need a step extra over manuals it seems. So if you're on 33s that's kinda crazy

The ring gear is very thin

33's. People forget to account for weight. I'm at 4400 pounds and I think it would have been perfect with 5.29, even if I moved up to 35's.
