I have been using 10W30 in the summer months and go back to 5W30 Mobil 1 Synthetic for the winter/fall/early spring months.

Just a bunch of old crap
Or use Mobil 1 synthetic 10w30 all year. Why do you go to conventional in the summer?

I bought about 20 quarts, when I had my old truck and thought it would be gone when I bought my new truck. The owners manual does say that using between changes is OK, but not to use it exclusively.

I didn't mention that about half is Castro 10W30 conventional oil and the other half is Castro 10W30 synthetic blend , so I combine the conventional and blended when changing.

I had some Mobil1 10W30 that I used recently. I normally use 5W30 year round. To be honest I didn't notice any difference and it may only be my imagination but I think the Taco tick was reduced. I wouldn't swear by it, though. Ambient temperatures were definite mid summer for Colorado, very warm.

I meant to say I use 5W30 Mobil 1 synthetic oil 8 months of the year, with the other 4 months using the 10W30 conventional/ blend combo.

Yeah, I'm using 5W30 Mobil1 normally. Also noticed you have a 2.7L, I have a V6. Probably doesn't matter in this case because they're both VVT-i and I assume the oil weight has more to do with how that operates than anything.

I'm thinking it's your imagination bud. Lol....the main ticking is from the injectors. If the oil change is affecting that sound, we may have more issues.....just saying.

Oh, I know. But perception is reality or some such thing. Most of my tick seems related to the EVAP VSV anyway, so yeah.

10W-30 is tooo thick and may harm your engine or shorten life, Use Mobil1 0W-30 or AMSOIL 0W-30, or stick with a full synthetic again of 5W-30 .

It'll be fine. I predominantly use 5W30, but
I grabbed some 10W30 because it was on sale and used it a couple times during summer months.
The manual states that I can use 10W30 in place of 5W30.

Its more than fine to use in the warmer parts of the country that dont see low temps in the winter. Its still a 30 weight oil.

Has anyone using 0W30 run an analysis to see how it protects and for how long? My owner's manual states 5W30 normally and 10W30 is acceptable, although it does specify going back to 5W30 on the next change.

I've read that Toyota changed oil weight specifications with TSB EG0118-06 to allow for GR engines to use 5W20. But this TSB came out before my truck was built and yet the cap and book still say 5W30.

I know there's a lot of discussion about using 0W30 and Amsoil says it's fine. But I've had Toyota engines last 250K following the owner's manual recommendations so I hesitate not to with my Tacoma. There's a lot going on with motor oil now, it lubricates the engine and operates the VVT, so I have to trust Toyota.

You do realize the pour point is with in a few degrees and that might be an important factor if you live some where winter temps routinely drop to -48F The "W" by the way means "winter" not weight. Shortening the life of an engine that should run 250 to 300 K may amount to 5,000 miles.
