Happened to be reading a thread on here about rigging your own pulley holder & someone asked about the rubber getting worn on the balancer. “Rubber?” I asked myself. So I went a hunting for info. I’ve been having some symptoms of this. Had to go in anyway due to a leaking water pump gasket.
I’m guessing this is the rubber? & I’m also guessing it’s not looking so good?

Thank you. Not what one wants to hear, however definitely could have eventually ended up costing me way more than 200.00 if i hadn’t learned to check.
Too bad checking this is not included in the belt changing vids.

Any strange or odd noises Kristi?? Like a metal on metal ticking sound

Wait until you see what happened to the one on my taco
Jeebers what an event it was

The only thing anybody (or is it just me?)wants to hear is a proper diagnostic from an ASE yota certified master tech
When you have an odd rattle and you wish to know where that be coming from!?

Yup. Ticking, slight rattle, rough idle, burning rubber smell….

As far as finding the source, yes. I am glad to have it figured out. I was just getting at that a 50.00 fix sounds better…. :spending:
But as I stated, coulda been a whole lot worse had it continued to deteriorate.

Hmmm. I didn't even think to inspect mine when it was off the truck.

    Oh my!
My ticking chatter was professionally diagnosed as the clutch throwout bearing making the racket this was before I had 150k on the taco, and it was quite noticeably loud when it was near zero temps out in the winter
So I believe their expert ASE diagnostic until the end when it finally broke into the moving engine fan blade over 40k miles later with the big whoosh whoosh sound of the fan blade hitting something until I made a sharp left and the noise stopped. That big puck came to rest on top of the power steering hose lol. BUT I still would not have a clue what was going on until I saw the charred up fan blade and took a look down and spotted a big metal puck just sitting there.

I had no noticeable burning rubber smell though!?

Sorry to make you spell it out... Are you saying you had that erratic ticking sound and it was your harmonic balancer? And it eventually broke loose?? Man, I'm moving this up to the top of my preventative maintenance list. My engine has been ticking like mad the last year or two and I had assumed it was the clutch pilot bearing...

    Ha-ha! That’s what I’m talking about…. 200.00 is ok with me….

The smell can happen because the accessory belts are being stressed because the crank pulley isn’t rotating evenly. Course ya never know if the pulley is the answer to all the symptoms. We shall see….

I got mine at NAPA. 250.00 & right now they’re doing a 20% off ship to home. It’s a Dorman. Did a little hunting around & it got good reviews.
Autozone has the same one. A little more expensive, but say you find you need one down the road & NAPA’s not doing the discount, AZ almost always has a 20% off.

    Dorman’s warranty is limited lifetime.

I'm gonna try a Dayco from RockAuto for about $200. Still an expensive hunk of metal, but if it can get rid of the tick and avert a potential disaster, it's worth it!

Dayco is preferable to Dorman? I just like buying local for most parts. Warranties may be decent at online stores, but most of them (rock auto included) require you pay return shipping no matter what the problem is. & then others, like Amazon, don’t honor the warranties even though they claim to.
I get it though, especially when it comes to preferring particular brands…. & then there are parts you just can’t get locally or they’re insanely expensive.

They're probably all china made junk, but I can't stomach $600 for an OEM pulley. I only went with Dayco based on my dislike for Dorman parts.

It finally dislodged into the moving fan on a very hard stop in the pouring rain at around 192k miles
In the early months of deteriorating there would be a noticeable strange ticking grindy noises shifting gears near the 2200 rpm mark especially in 3rd and 4th gear

If you press your clutch pedal in fully to the floor can you hear any of the chatter go away??

I stomached a little over 400 for OEM pulley in early '21,
You can find a better deal than 20 off at some online dealers that have 31 off and no extra shipping
Shoot the BFCM sale a couple weeks ago it was nearly 48% off MSRP

Here's pics of mine still on. Looks ok but maybe I wouldn't see the rubber well unless I remove the crank bolt/washer in the way?

Is it a bad idea to remove nothing but the crank bolt? I haven't ever done it. I'm imagining I might cause slack and a timing jump?

I wouldn’t imagine it would cause it to loosen. The bolt is the last thing to get installed. If it jumped without it, that’d be a problem. It’s the tensioner that holds the belt in place.
