Wondering if anyone has experience using this Harbor Freight double bike rack, I have a 3rd Gen access cab with an: Are MX Midrise topper and want to know if the bikes can be hauled without hitting the glass hatch of the topper

I used their motorcycle rack on a long trip with no issues other than learning to strap it down for minimal sway. Fit with my Softopper.

I would always recommend a bicycle rack made for a 2in receiver. A 1.25in is gonna wobble like crazy.

Tonered, thank you for the info. Now the search to find a similarly priced 2 inch 2 bike hitch rack continues

I have been selling Thule since the mid 1980s and always let clients and friends know that cheap bike racks will fail which usually render your bicycle to the scrap metal pile. Good quality bike racks don’t wobble, hold your bike securely, easy to use, and are an investment. If that rack is really good, you will take your bikes with you more.
Every quality bike rack holds the bicycle far away from the vehicle. Check out Thule, RockyMounts, Saris, Swagman, etc. Look on CL, FBMP, etc for used quality racks. The best hold the wheels, not the frame.

+1. My Thule T2 was one of the best (Craigslist) investments I ever made. Makes hauling/loading the bikes a breeze. I previously had a Thule frame hanging rack, and while it worked, it was a PITA to load and risked damaging the frame if not loaded properly.

    What they said.

I also sell car racks including bike racks, and I have seen some scary stuff with off-brand or improperly installed racks. Think racks literally falling off the car at highway speeds, swaying in crosswinds, cheap plastic pieces breaking, and bikes falling off. The more reputable brands spend quite a bit on engineering and testing. Thule, for example, sells products in Europe and has to meet some safety standards that other companies might not have to meet. $31.99 for a bike rack? Yikes!

I always ask folks if it's worth a couple of hundred dollars to spend on a higher quality product that won't potentially kill someone coming up behind you. Most see the point. (FWIW, I have had a ski rack come open on I70 and remember watching the upper arm fly off behind us. I am thankful to this day the skis didn't come off and go through someone's windshield at 70 mph....)

Craigslist is your friend. Was able to get a 4 bike Kuat tray in great shape for essentially half price.

I will also recommend the Thule T2. I have it with the two bike extension. Had mine for almost ten years. I use it on family trips. During the week for solo rides, I just lay my bike drivetrain side up in the bed. If my son rides with me, we put on the tailgate pad.
