My driver's side door handle has been acting up and would occasionally lock the door when I tried to open it. I was planning to replace the handle soon, but hadn't gotten around to it yet.

Took my 99 in to the shop to get the AC fixed and asked them to take a peak at the door as well while they had it.

Turns out the cost to fix and replace the handle + locking mechanism is $680 total after labor...

Not much I can do about it now, but seems like a pretty high cost for this type of work.

Am I getting raked over the coals or is this cost expected?

    4 run, 2 don't
Takes about 2 minutes to pull the door handle off with a screw driver.

There are little plastic clips that clip onto the rod/locking mechanism.

A youtube video will show you how quick and easy it is to check it out.

You could probably find a whole door for that much.

$680 for a door handle and a lock?! That must be for the entire mechanism from inner handle to outer lock. Its still a ripoff. The handles are about $40/pair and the locks are about the same. This job takes a flathead screwdriver, a phillips screwdriver, and a 10mm (I think) socket wrench w/extension. Total repair time about 1.5 hrs if you've never done it before and half that with experience. I would never pay $680 for such a simple job.
