    Hello TW.

Last month I got hit with pretty bad hail. I took my truck into a local body shop and they told me I would need a new hood and roof. I'm not too familiar with roof replacements but does anyone know if the windshield needs to be removed to replace the roof?

I had the windshield replaced a while back but the day after it was replaced, i noticed it shifted down about 1/4". The shop agreed to remount it but if the windshield needs to be removed anyway for the roof replacement, it'll save me a trip.

    TIA

Yes everything around or attached to the roof will come out...they will be welding so plastic, fabric and wiring don’t react well to immense heat.

Thanks! Now i just gotta hope they put everything back together well enough. Any little rattle would annoy the hell out of me :annoyed:

Request a tour of the shop...is it clean? Is it organized? Is the the customer waiting area a fucking mess? Do they have a copy of the chassis service manual for the Tacoma? If they don’t take pride in their shop you can bet they don’t take pride in their work and you’ll be left holding the bag. Good luck!

Im pretty sure its going to need a new roof. There are several dents where paint has been chipped as well.

Ouch!!!! Sorry to see that OP. PDR won’t be an option here unfortunately. That’s one hell of a storm.

Its funny the insurance adjuster marked everything as PDR with a few pieces with push to paint. Estimate he gave me was $4800 with $500 deductible. Luckily he okayed OEM glass though.

Wow, sorry to see that! The weather has been nuts!

Good time to justify a roof rack, kinda..

Just an update. I got my truck back after about a month and a half at the shop. They ended up replacing the hood (i replaced with a sport hood), roof, and driver side fender. Repaired and resprayed passenger side door and roof rails. PDR on the rest. All together about $10k in work.

I know with this amount of work I shouldnt expect perfection but what level of imperfections would you guys call acceptable? My biggest concern right now is the head liner. The dome light is a bit loose and there is a little bit of up and down play on the head liner. I dont remember if there was any play prior to the roof chop.

Ill add some pictures tomorrow when the sun is out.

You should accept only perfection that's what they get paid for .

Interior should be perfect. Paint I’d hope for 9.5/10 as I have lost hope that any body shop can do decent work, let alone perfection.

If the initial adjuster gave me anywhere close to 10k I definitely would've taken the money

None. Be picky as you need to be happy. They are being paid to do quality work. You should be happy with it because when you resell it will have a claim and you will be unlikely to get full resale.

I read a really detailed thread here on TW a while back related to insurance claims, damage, resale, etc. It may be worth a read.

    Be picky!
