H2, H4, & L4 Should one shift through gears, appropriately, in these modes?

Posted this in an old thread a few days ago, thought I would post it here. I'm not having any issues with driving in any of these modes, just curious from those 'more in the know' than me.

I hope my scenarios makes sense, I re-read them a few times, but there's always that chance that it's not coming across as I've intended it to.

H2 - mostly drive in (gear) 4. If above 50 MPH, yes, shift in to D, and occasionally as appropriate (speed wise) I will put it in L and drive for short distance, shift to 2 (short distance drive), shift to 3 (short distance drive or if towing my boat up a hill), shift to 4 (below 50 MPH) and then shift to D when above 50 mph. I don't or maybe rarely shift to D when in H2 towing. I don't have need to tow in H2 long distance and when I have to I just stay in 4 and in right lane. I'm not in a hurry to get to the ramp. My thinking is to 'normal H2' drive to lubricate those gears as I'm sure they need it to be used.

H4 - always drive in 4, ice in snow (if/when we have it here in Middle TN). Never have used (makes sense to me) D, 3, 2, or L gears as I'm going slower in these conditions. Let me say that in H4 with ice/snow my truck doesn't lose traction. Now, I'm not doing any stupid driving with ice/snow, but I'll do NASCAR like "tire cleaning" to see if it'll break traction, but that's going like 10 maybe 20 mph, never above that, just to see how she'll handle it.

L4 - so, here's my main question. While in L4, should I always keep it in 4 or...is it okay (or a good thing) to shift through L, 2, 3, and 4 (never in D) when in L4? When in L4 does it make a difference in this mode to work through the other gears?

Go easy on a brother if I'm not doing something I should know and I'll be glad I'm not within an arm's reach of a pop upside the head of "what the heck are you doing". Appreciate your time and sharing of your knowledge.

I use lower gears in H4 for engine braking on ice to avoid pedal braking and sliding.

You can use any gear in L4 as long as you keep the speed below say 20MPH. I use L and 2 gears often in L4 for crawling up or down a steep hill.

Thanks for replying Springsboy, here in mid-TN we get mostly ice in winter, maybe a tiny bit of snow on top of that. An occasional 6" snow might grace us in January. The few times it has been like this H4 in 4 has been my go to. No hills to worry about, but I tell ya...there's no slip/slidin' going on with my truck, it'll go anywhere...20-30 mph and again, not driving dumb either, still need to be careful, but I am amazed with the traction I get and just have regular ole truck tires on it. Probably a little different out in Colorado in the winters :) Nice hammerhead y'all caught there!
