Iv just been seeing this configuration a lot recently, what's the deal? The only
logical reason I can think of is maybe it's just a way to pay for new tires if you don't really have the money for it? Is it FWD vs RWD?

Are you seeing this on trucks or all vehicles in general? I know that some people will put a more snow/ice rated tire on the traction axle during winter season, but really, you should replace all 4 tires at the same time with the same brand/model.

my guess would be budget reasons. if you can afford all 4 tires, do that.

some people will put snows on the back of their trucks (RWD) in the winters. this helps with getting moving, but when turning you want the fronts to grip too, so having h/t in the front isn't going to do you any good.

if your 2wd, i suppose u would get slightly better mileage with street tires up front while still maintaining some off road traction, also street tires prolly cheaper than at''s but pretty much limits ability to rotate and retain usefulness

Come on man...it is VERY common to run with a traction tire in back and a rib tire in front on a two wheel drive.

You are seeing it on trucks because trucks are rear wheel drive and people assume that by putting the traction tires on the drive axle they will be safe. How smart is it to be able to get yourself up to speed with good traction tires on the drive axle, but not be able to make a turn because your steering axle has crappy tires?

HT style tires are just fine for the front of a 2wd truck. On my 94 toy my typical setup was Michelin x-one in the 205/70R14 size during summer and swapping the back tires out for a sears house brand six ply studdable traction tire in the original 195/75R14. I would get highway sway from the fronts having too much traction and the rears not enough.

Not really. In fact if it's so common why is he asking? Why doesn't everyone run H/T in front and A/T in the back?

Because its counterproductive. Like having a boat with a bitchin propeller with a toothpick for a rudder.
