‘H’ Key without remote unlocking for 3rd gen 6MT?

    Hey folks,

Been lurking some other ‘key’ & ‘remote entry’ threads and I think I saw an SR key that opens the doors and starts the truck-in other words a normal vanilla car key.

Am I reading this correctly? Does anyone know a part number or online re-seller of these? If so, I can order two (yes I like extra keys) and have them cut and programmed by a local automotive locksmith.

I am not trying to start a discussion of ‘why wouldn’t you want the remote buttons’. But if you are wondering, I like the ability to have a key with a smaller footprint at a lower cost so that I can run a couple copies to leave at several undisclosed locations. These will be used as backups or maybe every day carry keys. Not worried about theft with the MT but the topper and tailgate will remain locked-and easily unlocked with the unlock button. I remember (fondly) trunk pop buttons in the glovebox so this is really not a big deal for me.

Thank you in advance for your input!

Yes, I got two extra keys, exactly as you describe -- "H" keys without the remote locking/unlocking. The part number is 89785-0D170 and the list price at a Toyota dealer was $27.70 each (which included the mechanical cutting).

The expensive part, however, is the programming. Programming the two keys, at the same dealer, was an additional $154.95. I believe this price is fixed, regardless of the number of keys you have programmed. So, the more keys you have programmed at the same time, the less the charge per key.

(Buying the keys, and having them cut, is done in the parts department while the programming is done in the service department. This could be relevant if you have to make an appointment for service, and of course the truck has to be physically present.)

Literally had a thread with exact same question and couldn’t get an answer! AWESOME! I agree OP I prefer basic keys as well. Getting a new truck in 2 weeks ill see if they can throw the programming in for free. Ty

PS they are cheaper on eBay. Found 2/24 on eBay seems like a good deal just purchased a set.

Are you both sure this can be done for a trd off-road? Or non sr-models? Cause I don’t want to jump through all these hoops and pay the money just to have them open doors and not be able to start the car. Based on what I was reading you need a chip that’s in the unlock housing to actually start it no?

Yeah, OP would need an "H" chip to actually start the truck, but I believe that's what he wants, and that's what @NoVa TRD Sport linked.
I bought aftermarket "H" keys (with the chips) for my Sport, and programmed them myself. Both worked just fine.

I found this on eBay. Look right??? Would be easy to buy 3 and have a local auto locksmith cut and program the Transponder to start the truck. Different note...anyone know how many keys can be programmed for one vehicle?

We are in the same boat lol! Except my allocation was just filled for a 2022 manual Tacoma trd off-road. Some extra keys would be great! Waiting for someone to confirm

Yes, that's the key. It's true that the key itself is cheaper on ebay, but if you buy it from a Toyota dealer they include the physical cutting. Otherwise, you have to factor in the cost of cutting, either by a locksmith or at a place like Home Depot.

Regarding the programming, that involves the truck's computer, not the key itself. There's a finite limit (8 or 9?) to the number of keys that the truck will accept. (I have a total of 4 and they all work OK.)

^this. I bought the exact key at the dealership, they cut it for free, and had it programmed for less than $90 OTD.

Thanks. Will they cut it by the VIN or do they need a physical key to make a copy? Are key codes used any more (I remember them on old Ford keys.)

When I took delivery of my new truck, one of the keys had a tag attached that had a key code (not the VIN). I'm sure this key code will work for the cutting, and maybe also the VIN. I just had them copy my original key.

According to the owner's manual (page 112), there's supposed to be a metal "key number plate" but all I got was a paper tag. (It was laminated in plastic.)

Question? Can you hide a program key on the outside of the truck? And keep the doors lock? They tell me you cannot lock the keys in the truck?

I have a push button start. 2019 TRD OR.

I don't think you can without some type of faraday bag. Maybe a faraday bag in receiver hitch safe would accomplish what you need.

Thank you for those infos. Sometimes it is nice to carry a spare key somewhere outside of the vehicle.
All my older key cars I had hidden spots . Many times we accidentally lock the keys inside the cars. At the beach or while fishing you can accidentally drop the keys and lose them.

Off course you should always have spare keys at home.

I don't know. My automatic sr5 has the H key. I have only tried to lock the truck with a spare key while the engine was running with the remote and it wouldn't lock.

I do have a plain metal key sans chip in a hidden box under the truck. In case the keys get locked in which happened to other vehicles with chip keys.

My 1999 FordRanger has a chip key. I am able to hide a spare key. (Stainless steel screws and a wing nut.).

Fobs? They say the Tacoma key fob battery can be turn off.

Yes, hold down lock and push unlock twice (I think is the sequence) to turn the fob off. You can now put the fob anywhere (including in the truck) you want and use the small key they gave you to unlock the door. But keep in mind if someone finds the fob pushing any button will turn it again and allow them to start the truck.

Thank you. Hiding any key or fob, if someone finds it. The truck maybe gone in 90 seconds,

Still the idea of keeping a spare key maybe a good idea? Sometimes keys do get lost? Fishing ,camping , hiking, etc.
