Hello, I was the organizer for the initial Group Purchase of the Red Bullet modified variable valve timing solenoids for the single VVT-i 1GR-FE 4.0L V6 engine. The original GB can be found here: Red Bullet Solenoid GB #1 Without going into detail, the 1st GB took the better part of 15 months as there was an initial delay due to a competitor blocking our order from being placed with one manufacturer, which lead to us to help a 2nd manufacturer develop a similar product where we assisted with the testing and R&D.

    What is Toyota VVT-i? :
    https://toyota-club.net/files/faq/16-01-01_faq_vvt_4_eng.htm

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VVT-i
    • VVT-i varies the timing of the intakevalves by adjusting the relationship between the camshaft drive (belt or chain) and intake camshaft. Engine oil pressure is applied to an actuator to adjust the camshaft position. Adjustments in the overlap time between the exhaust valve closing and intake valve opening result in improved engine efficiency.
    What is a VVT-i solenoid?
    • The variable valve timing solenoid is a component of the variable valve timing system that manages the oil flow depending on the engine speed and load.
How does a VVT-i solenoid work?
    • The VVT solenoid works with oil pressure, using direction from the ECU to alter rotation of the camshaft.
    • The solenoid alters the oil flow in the conduit leading to the camshaft phaser(s).
    • Conduits can be "instructed" to hasten or delay intake valve opening depending on which conduit will be called upon by the solenoid.
    • Variation of the intake pressure will be used by the powertrain computer to optimize fuel delivery to the combustion chambers.

    Threads on problematic VVT-i issues/symptoms:
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We partnered with Red Bullet Solenoids to help bring to market the modified VVT-i solenoids for the early 1GR-FE 4.0L V6 Toyota engine.

    Vendor: Red Bullet Solenoids
Product: Modified Variable Valve Timing Oil Solenoid
Overseas Promo Videos: Solenoid 1 Solenoid 2

Real World TW Member Dyno Test (not marketing fluff): 2008 Tacoma V6 Supercharged
".........the dyno testing was performed with the Red Bullet solenoids tested first (baseline). And then a break in action to R/R to the stock Toyota solenoids (~25 mins) before performing two dyno pulls with the stock toyota solenoids. The BLUE and RED dyno pulls (curves) would be the most accurate in comparison since both runs were performed under a normal operating temperature range. The peak HP and TQ numbers don't matter as much as the delta between those numbers in each pull."

Stock Solenoid: (HP/TQ) (Engine Coolant Temp and Intake Air Temp)
    BLUE CURVE : 283.68hp / 273.50tq (ECT 169F and IAT 68F)

    Red Bullet VVT-i solenoid:
    RED CURVE : 289.73hp / 286.87tq (ECT 174F and IAT 73F)

Red Bullet has given me permission to coordinate a second group purchase that will be capped at 25 participants and run until Feb 28, 2023.

PM me for more information to participate!!!

On a stock NA 4.0L V6 1GR-FE engine with the OTT (Overland Torque Tune) from @JustDSM, are there any additional tune optimizations that might better take advantage of this higher-performance VVT solenoid?

Is any ECU programming required, or will the stock ECU automatically learn about & characterize the higher performance of the new solenoid during normal driving?

you should not need to tune it but wouldn't hurt. Also depends if your setup for data logging. I am going to run a log after I add these to see if we have any adjustments to make.

Yeah I like to live debt free, so cash in hand before I make purchases. Maybe if I could get a damn promotion this wouldn't be a problem.
