Hi guys. Wanted to see if anyone else has had this specific type of problem I have looked through a few different threads now and have not found anything that’s exactly like this. My truck is an 03 double cab automatic w/four-wheel-drive. The other day while driving I was stopped at a stoplight when I went to go forward the truck started to make a jerking/shuttering movement. Got it to my house and put it into park. After shifting the transmission back into reverse and drive I am noticing a pretty loud metallic grinding noise coming from what sounds like the area where The transmission and engine meet up.I have made Sure to check my ATF fluid while the engine is hot fluid level is up to the hot mark on the dipstick. Checked and rechecked to make sure my transfer case is not in neutral.Transmission will shift into reverse and drive and the truck will drive in both reverse and drive. I also I’m noticing that the noise is still there for a few seconds after I shut off the engine indicating something is still spinning freely inside there. Scaned for any codes using an OBD-II scan gauge nothing came up and the cel light is not on. Had it towed to a shop and After taking a look at it they are Telling me a few possible causes for the problem but obviously can’t tell for sure without dropping the transmission. Anybody else ever had this issue? Most other threads I have read the problem was because the transfer case was in neutral low fluid or something else I have triple checked all this stuff and made sure that’s not causing it. Guessing Planetary gears, broken/cracked flex plate, faulty torque converter, something else inside tranny. Truck has always shifted well no signs of slippage or anything indicating the transmission is going out before this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Welcome,

wish I could help. It really is a guessing game or generalization without some form of tear down or dis-assembly. Too many things.

We’re you off roading recently, any recent maintenance, any recent large puddles or pot holes, new tires or suspension work?

Thanks for the welcome. Been on here for a bit just had not posted yet. Only recent maintenance was I put in a new power steering pump. I was driving on a forest service road about a week back but since then up until now the truck was not making this noise and shifting just fine. Yeah unfortunately it’s just all a guessing game. Fingers crossed it’s not major.

Howdy, did you ever resolve this issue? I have a 03 SR5v6 4x4 with a similar chunkly / grindy-noise when I start it up, and idle / gently throttle forward and reverse. A close friend suggested the torque converter, but am just getting into the research phase of fixing it. Thanks!

Sorry for the late response. Yeah my transmission ended up having a broken part in it that ended up causing some further damage. I sourced a used transmission that had lower miles and ended putting that one in. I would definitely have someone check it out that you can trust I have heard of some people having a cracked clutch plate or similar things happen. If you do end up having to do a new transmission like I did I definitely look into a good used option as I found it was much cheaper than doing new or rebuilt
