Grinding/dragging sound on acceleration

The little I know of auto maintenance (oil changes, greasing zerks, spark plugs, etc) has come from you great folks at TW. Looking for some help on where to start....

When accelerating 0-45mph, I hear a grinding/dragging sound. I confirmed that when coasting (foot off the gas pedal) the sound goes away entirely, but returns the instant my foot presses the gas. The issue may be occurring at faster speeds, but it's only audible under 45mph.

 

Hopefully it's just a heat shield on one of your cats

 

I had similar symptoms and it was my third member going out.

 

So what’s you end up doing?

 

I pulled the third member and had a peak inside, could clearly see there was odd wear on ring and pinion... also noticed the pinion flange nut had been "re-staked" at some point (bought truck used) and this is a good indicator that someone had been in there and didn't torque down the nut properly which lead to the wear..

Really had two options at that point, send off for rebuild or find a used one, luckily I found a used one nearby and picked it up, no more whining while pressing throttle.

 

Cool.... was it simple to swap out?

If doing it for the first time it still shouldn't take longer than 4 hours or so.. I just did it again to install a SUA setup in the rear and it took under an hour.

 

I'll check the oil in the rear diff then as a start.

 

I had a bit of a clattering/clicking sound when i would accelerate and it turned out being pinging from pre detonation. Here in tx for a while we were having gas runs so only regular unleaded was available. After switching back over to premium the noise has gone away completely. Im not sure if this is what youve got going on, but it might be worth looking into if youre running 87 octane fuel.

On page 13 of that thread posted above, theres a video with the noise that my truck (v6 4x4) was making under any sort of throttle/accleration

 

Just wanted to follow-up. It ended up being the cat's heatshield like @Pigpen suggested. One of the bolts holding the heatshield had rusted out. I purchased a marine grade hose clamp and wrapped around the heatshield, rattle is gone.

 

I love when it's a cheap and easy fix!!
