I noticed that my rear differential was leaking from the fill plug. I just topped it off a week ago and put a new crush washer on and torque It to spec. When I pulled the plug out, out came this green fluid. And a lot of it came out, much more than I expected from a fill plug. Gonna do a drain and fill and measure the fluid that comes out. Just wondering your thoughts on why it is green after only 10k miles.IMG_1018.jpg IMG_1022.jpg IMG_1021.jpg

What did they fill it with? What did you top it off with? Drain everything, save everything, post photos. Are there two different fluids in there? Where is the stuff that you put in?

Send the green stuff to Blackstone for analysis. ( other suggestions ? )

Is there more to the story? I wouldn’t expect to see clear fluid (of any color) after 10,000 miles, and not on a 2017.

This is what I topped it off with. It’s the only thing available at the parts store.IMG_1023.jpg

I had no clue as to the maintenance history so that was part of the negotiation for the truck. it was a Chevy dealership

IMG_1024.jpg I got a new problem now. This washer seems to be too small on the drain plug. It don’t even look like a crush washer and I cannot get it off.

I will defer to those with more experience. Two guys say it looks like new oil. Easiest way to confirm is to ask the dealer.

I have never seen green differential fluid. Why would you say this is normal? If you Google it the only green differential fluid there is is for a tractor.

I've never heard of a differential flush lol. You drain it and fill it.

There is nothing to worry about.
You aren't the first to see green differential fluid.
    You won't be the last.

Change the fluid and be done with it.

What about the situation with the washer? I can’t get it off. It’s not a crush washer. Only option is to leave it on. Use some thread seal. I’d try to cut it off but I don’t want to damage threads in the process. I don’t think it’s wise to throw a washer over top of this one. Refer to the picture I sent with the bolt

That Valvoline you put in will be fine. I’ve used it in my Ranger, 4Runner and Tacoma.

You can't pry it off with a flat blade screw driver?
Some times you have to use one on each side.
Use the flat blade like a wedge, one on each side.
Then peck the screw driver(s) down and pop it off.

No, it’s too tight. It looks like it got deformed. I don’t want to risk damaging threads so I just threw some thread seal on it and torque it back down. I’ll monitor it for leaks in the days to come. when I get back from vacation, I’ll swing by Toyota and get another drain plug

I've used green gear oil for outboard motor before. Been a while, but I think it was 80w-90 gl-4 can't remember the brand, may have been sta-lub.
